Freshman Learning Community

The Freshman Learning Community (FLC) at Sam Houston State University gives freshmen a unique opportunity to become more familiar with the necessary academic and social skills to be successful. FLC students share a dynamic undergraduate experience that will prove invaluable in the workplace or graduate work.

The FLC cohorts are non-residential learning communities. The FLC differs from the Bearkat Learning Community (BLC) in that the BLC has a residential (living) component, and the FLC does not. Students in the FLC take a structured, two-semester sequence of three common courses among their other courses. The FLC cohorts for 2009-2010 will be Agricultural Sciences, Career Development, Criminal Justice, Education, Success and Math, and Reading. Each cohort will be capped at 25 students.

Benefits of learning communities include meeting a group of friends quickly, having opportunities to establish strong study groups, sharing connected educational experiences, enhancing leadership skills by working collaboratively, and feeling empowered through being part of decision-making while achieving your educational and social goals.
