EXPERIENCE MEXICO: SHSU PUEBLA FIELD SCHOOL: 2008

Student Guidelines

As representatives of Sam Houston State University in a foreign country, our goal is to maintain high standards while learning about and enjoying the culture. The SHSU Puebla Field School is a long-term study-abroad program that could be jeopardized by illegal or disrespectful behavior. Keep in mind that Mexican culture is more traditional and conservative than U.S. culture. Good manners and observation of cultural decorum will help ensure that future SHSU students will be welcome guests for years to come.

1. All Sam Houston State University regulations apply to the Puebla Field School.

2. No illegal drugs are permitted. Mexican law carries stiff penalties and imprisonment for illegal drug use. Marijuana is illegal in Mexico. Typical legal procedure in Mexico involves detaining the accused for one year in jail before the trial. Just as under Texas laws, “public intoxication” is illegal in Mexico.

3. SHSU advocates abstaining from alcohol. If you decide to use alcohol, responsible use is required at all times. No alcohol is permitted during class times and field trips.

4. When enjoying nightlife activities, stay in groups and look out for one another. Don't leave anyone stranded. If one person is kicked out, it's time for the whole group to leave.

5. No firearms are permitted.

6. Hotel rules and etiquette are to be respected. This includes:
    a) appropriate attire in all areas outside of one's room;
    b) observance of appropriate noise levels;
    c) respect must be shown to hotel personnel and other guests;
    d) alcohol consumed at the hotel must be purchased at the hotel;
    e) no overnight guests allowed without management's written approval
    f) no parties on hotel premises are allowed without management's written
       approval

The hotel has the responsibility to notify the Mexican police if laws are being broken (see#2, above).

7. If you stay with a family, you must show respect for them. You will sign and adhere to the "Regulations for Lodging."

8. If you stay at the hotel, you must show respect for hotel staff and guests. You will sign and adhere to the "Hotel Regulations."

9. You are traveling as United States citizens. If your personal conduct has legal ramifications, the University will not become involved.
