ACADEMIC AFFAIRS:

The following scholarships are awarded in the spring, through the Division of Academic Affairs, for the next academic year:

  1. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS GENERATIONS SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing, majoring in any discipline; be (a) a natural, step, or adopted child or grandchild of a currently employed staff member from the non-college Division of Academic Affairs or (b) a natural, step, or adopted child or grandchild of a retired staff member of the non-college Division of Academic Affairs, with a retirement date on or after December 31, 2008; demonstrate financial need by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); and be employed full-time or part-time, and/or involved in community service, and/or be active in an on-campus organization.  GPA of 2.50 is required. 
  2. AMATO BROTHERS SCHOLARSHIP: $3,000 per year; Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student, majoring in any discipline, demonstrate financial need, and exhibit commitment to continue and complete their education. The recipient must maintain not less than a 2.5 GPA in major and overall.
  3. ARLEIGH B. TEMPLETON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipients must be full or part-time undergraduate or graduate students majoring in any discipline within the College of Education.  Job Corps graduates have priority.  GPA of 3.50 is required. 
  4. ANNA PENNYBACKER MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT: Recipient must be: a full-time student junior or senior majoring in any discipline; demonstrate that they have had several months of travel and/or have studied at a recognized center of art or culture; and maintain an overall 2.5 GPA.
  5. ARTHUR BEVERLY AND MARY ALICE MAYS ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester, two semesters. Awarded to students who have attended SHSU for two consecutive academic years with an overall GPA of not less than 3.0 and be classified as a juniors or seniors.
  6. BAPTIST WOMEN'S CECIL M. & DOROTHY ANN DIXON JONES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount to be determined by the selection committee. Recipient must be a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Huntsville,TX; have applied for admission and been accepted, or be enrolled as a full-time student at SHSU, majoring in any discipline; maintain an overall GPA of 2.5. Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor in the selection process.
  7. BRUCE/HILLEGEIST ENDOWMENT FUND: $2,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time student in good standing and majoring in any discipline; demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 3.00 is required.  Application deadline is February 1st.   8. CHARLES W. JONES, JR. COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP: $500 award to a student enrolled in good standing at SHSU, majoring in any discipline. Recipients must: demonstrate involvement in community service; demonstrate financial need; and maintain not less than an overall 2.5 GPA.
  9. DAN RATHER/HORATIO ALGER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount of award is determined by accrued interest. Recipient must: be enrolled and in good standing at SHSU; major in any discipline; maintain an overall GPA of 3.0; submit an essay describing how student has overcome adversity; submit three letters of recommendation; and demonstrate financial need.
  10. DR. RUTH M. CADY AND DR. DOROTHY A. HUSKEY HEALTH SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP: $2,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior student in good standing; 1) pursuing a pre-professional health related major (pre-dental, pre-medical, pre-med tech, pre-nursing, pre-physician's assistant, pre-physical therapy) or nursing; or 2) majoring in health education.  GPA of 3.20 is required. Application deadline is February 1st. For additional information, contact Paula Turner, 936-294-4861, email: prt001@shsu.edu
  11. ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT GENERATIONS SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student, in good standing, enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in any discipline, be a (a) natural, step, or adopted child or grandchild of a currently employed staff member from the University's Enrollment Management Division; or (b) natural, step, or adopted child or grandchild of a retired staff member of the University's Enrollment Management Division, with a retirement date on or after December 31, 2007; demonstrate financial need by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and be employed full-time or part-time, and/or involved in community service, and be active in an on-campus organization.  GPA requirement is 2.50.
  12. ERNESTINE LeTARDE CARROLL & OUIDA CARROLL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for two semesters following date of award. Recipients must: be enrolled at SHSU; major in english, history, speech, political science, sociology, or theatre and dance; and maintain not less than an overall 3.0 GPA.
  13. FITZ FAMILY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for the next two semesters following the date of the award. SHSU recipients must have not less than a 3.0 GPA. High school applicants must meet the same requirements as those for University Scholars; all applicants must demonstrate financial need.
  14. GLENDA DAWSON EDUCATIONAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student, majoring in any discipline.  Financial need is a consideration. 
  15. HOUSTON AND ROBBIE McCARLEY COMMUNITY SERVICE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU, majoring in any discipline, have a minimum of 20 hours of documented community service within the last year and demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.00 is required.
  16. INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL EXCHANGE COBA SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing, and majoring in any discipline within the College of Business Administration; must have transferred from a college in the Lone Star College System; and must have been previously or currently affiliated with the International Cultural Exchange (ICx) as attested to by the representative of ICx.  GPA of 2.00 is required.  Application deadline is February 15th.  For additional information, contact the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office; 936-294-1774. 
  17. JESSE H. JONES & MARY GIBBS JONES SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for two semesters following the award. Recipients must be sophomores, junior or seniors, majoring in liberal arts(economics, English, foreign language, geography, history, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology, and speech communications) or graphic arts (art, studio art, animation art, multimedia, and photography) and maintain not less than a 3.0 GPA.
  18. JESSE NEWELL & THOMAS SEARS MONTGOMERY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount of award is determined by accrued interest. Recipient must: demonstrate financial need; meet normal SHSU entrance requirement; and be enrolled as full-time student at SHSU; and maintain an overall GPA of not less than 2.5.
  19. JIM STEVENS COMPUTER SERVICES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:$1,000 per year. Recipient must be a part or full-time undergraduate, graduate or doctoral student, majoring in any discipline and be employed by Computer Services Department for at least the last six months.  Financial need is a consideration.   GPA requirement is 2.80.  Application submission deadline is Feb. 15.
  20. JOHN A. ELMORE, JR. SCHOLARSHIPS: Awarded to outstanding students majoring in journalism who have consistently maintained a minimum 3.0 grade point average during their freshman year at SHSU. (Application deadline: MARCH 1)
  21. JOHN W. SPONBERG JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP: $250 per semester for two semesters. Recipients must: be a sophomore; major in mass communications with an emphasis on journalism; and maintain not less than a 3.0 GPA.
  22. JUANITA BROWN THREADGILL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $1,500 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in any discipline, have taken time between high school and starting college (minimum of six months) or be returning to college (after a minimum of six months out of college) to finish a degree or to get another degree.  Preference will be given to single parents.  Recipients will continue to receive this award for a second year as long as they are students at SHSU and continue to meet the selection criteria.  They must submit a one page essay on their future plans and how the scholarship has affected them.  Recipients may receive the scholarship for a third year if they write an essay demonstrating that they are under particular hardship and deserve to receive the scholarship another year.  GPA of 2.8 is required. 
  23. HERRINGTON VETERANS SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per year. Scholarship awarded to a married undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University. Student must be a US Army veteran who has served in a foreign conflict at least 6 months and has an honorable discharge. Financial need is a consideration in the selection of a recipient, but not a determining factor. GPA of at least 2.8 is required.
  24. McDONALD'S/DAN LEASURE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: The amount of the scholarship varies per semester. Recipients must be a full time sophomore, junior or senior. Recipients with the following majors will be selected on a rotating schedule: dance, basketball and accounting. Selection preference will be given to a McDonald's employee, who is a full time SHSU sophomore, junior, or senior maintaining not less than an overall 3.0 GPA.
  25. M.C. SUTTON SCHOLARSHIP: $500 award for the fall semester following date of award. Recipient must; be physically challenged; be a full-time student at SHSU; work toward a degree in any discipline; have completed at least 30 semester credit hours; and maintain not less than an overall GPA of 2.5.
  26. MILDRED REED HANCOCK ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per year. Scholarship is available to full-time sophomore, junior or senior majoring in any discipline at SHSU. This scholarship was established to benefit persons who started college, but left to raise a family. Recipient must demonstrate financial need and have a GPA of at least 2.5.
  27. FACILITIES MANAGEMENT FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per semester. Recipients must a full-time undergraduate student with more consideration given to upperclassmen; in good standing' majoring in any discipline' be a natural, step or adopted child or grandchild of a currently employed SHSU Facilities Management staff member; maintain minimum overall GPA of 2.5 with more consideration given to those applicants with the higher GPA. If incoming freshman, must meet or exceed the minimum SAT or ACT score required. In the event of two equal candidates, financial need will be considered. GPA of 2.50 is required. Application deadline is Feb. 1st.
  28. RAVEN/KAPPA ALPHA ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: The amount of the scholarship varies per semester. Recipients must be full-time undergraduate students (minimum of 12 hours, first time or repeat hours), active member of Gamma Tau chapter of Kappa Alpha Order, in good standing with the university, the fraternity and the National Office of Kappa Alpha Order and of good character to reflect positively on the Chapter. GPA requirement is 3.0 in previous long semester.
  29. ROBYN LEIGH BARRUM MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for two semesters of the freshman year. Recipients must: be a graduate of Huntsville High School who has applied for admission and been accepted as a full-time student at SHSU, majoring in any discipline; maintain not less than a 2.0 GPA; and demonstrate financial need.
  30. RUTH AND J.A. CHANDLER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipients must be full-time junior or senior students in good standing and of good character enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in agriculture or elementary education or family and consumer science with the intent to receive teacher certification.  GPA of 2.50 is required.
  31. SCOTT A. BICKEL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 for one semester. Recipients must: be full/part-time students enrolled at SHSU; major in any discipline; and work as a correctional officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. May 1st application deadline date.
  32. STATE FARM FRIENDS OF SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIV. ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $2,000 per year.  Recipients must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing and majoring in any discipline; demonstrate strong financial need. GPA of 2.00 is required.  Application deadline is February 15.
  33. THE UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP: Is a competitive scholarship awarded to entering freshmen, Sam Houston State University undergraduate and transfer students whose academic accomplishments and university or community citizenship are excellent in every respect. This competitive scholarship is intended for a full time student enrolled as a resident, nonresidents or a citizen of a country other than the United States of America, maintaining not less than a 3.25 GPA. The award amount is determined on the availability of funds.
  34. VIVIAN REID MEHR SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester; Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled at SHSU and majoring in any discipline; entering or returning to college after raising a family or planning a second career. 3.0 GPA requirement. Application deadline is March 1.
  35. DRS. WILFRED AND BOBBIE DIETRICH ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $500 per year; Recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior or senior student in good standing, majoring in English, speech communication, theatre or musical theatre; demonstrate a financial need. GPA requirement 3.0.
  36. LORETTA J. HANKINS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate in good standing and majoring in any discipline within the College of Business Administration; demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.50 is required.
  37. BEESON SCHOLARSHIP: $3,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing; majoring in industrial technology or majoring in any discipline within the College of Business Administration; and demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Application deadline is February 1st. 
  38. J. B. AND KATHRYN SALLAS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 minimum per year.  Recipient must be a full-time or part-time (minimum of 9 hours) undergraduate or graduate student in good standing, majoring in any discipline; be a graduate of a Houston County high school (Crockett, Lovelady, Latexo, Grapeland, or Kennard); and demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.75 is required.  Application deadline is February 1st.
  39. FORMER FOSTER YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time or part-time (minimum of 9 credit hours per semester) undergraduate student in good standing, majoring in any discipline, demonstrate financial need, and must be a former foster youth, orphan, or ward of the state.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Application deadline is February 15th.
  40. BARACHEL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate in good standing and majoring in any discipline; be proficient in a second language; travel internationally for summer internship arranged by the Donor; attend monthly intern meetings; and prepare for an international assignment outside of the United States upon graduation. GPA of 2.50 is required. This scholarship does NOT have an application deadline.  For additional information, please contact the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office; 936-294-1774.
  41. JAMES F. AND NANCY P. GAERTNER PRESENTIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student classified as a junior, in good standing, and majoring in any discipline; be active in campus activities and have leadership potential. GPS of 3.25 is required.  Application deadline is February 1st.  For additional information, contact the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office; 936-294-1774.
  42. JOHN C.   43. CLAY AND MARGARET B.   44. ED SANDHOP ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FOR VETERANS:  $2,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing; majoring in any discipline; be a veteran from one of the following United States services: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines; possess an Honorable Discharge of service; have served a tour of duty.  Applicants who have served a tour of duty but have been temporarily released from duty to complete the required education to become an officer through a service commissioned program may also be considered eligible.  GPA of 2.0 is required.  Application deadline is February 1st.  For additional information, contact the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office; 936-294-1774.
  45. L.B. AND RAGNA LYNN BILLINGSLEY SCHOLARSHIP:  $2,500 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing; major or minor in any discipline; be a citizen of the United States; and be a resident of Texas.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Application deadline is February 1st.
  46. BENTWATER® SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a current employee of Bentwater®, Bentwater® employee's spouse, legal dependent, child or grandchild; have a high school degree, be a full-time or part-time graduate or undergraduate student (incoming Freshmen and transfer students included) in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University or Lone Star College System majoring in any discipline; enrolled in a minimum of six hours per semester.  Co-curricular activities, work experience, community service, and financial needs in addition to scholastic record will be considered.  GPA of 2.50 required.  Application deadline is February 1st.
  47. DOROTHY COWART ROBERSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year. Donor will reward one annual scholarship of $1,000 to a full-time, undergraduate student in good standing majoring in any discipline; who must be a natural, step, adopted child or grandchild of a retired faculty or staff member of SHSU, with a retirement date on or after December 31, 2012; maintain a 2.5 GPA, have completed a Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with a score of between 5,000 and 10,000, be employed full-time or part-time, and/or be involved in community service, and/or be active in on-campus organizations.
  48. SENIOR CLASS LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year. Donor will reward one or more annual scholarships of $1,000 to a full-time sophomore, junior or senior student, including sophomore, junior or senior transfer students, in good standing, major in any discipline; overall GPA of 2.50 and demonstrate a financial need.
  49. THE REBA BOCK FELLOWS EXPERIENCE: $1,000 minimum, to a full-time junior, senior or graduate student in good standing; majoring in any discipline, and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.5. For additional applicant information please contact the Director for the Center for Academic Community Engagement. Application deadline on April 15th.  
  50. JIM STEVENS INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:$1,000 per year. Recipient must be a part or full-time undergraduate, graduate or doctoral student, majoring in any discipline and be employed by Computer Services Department for at least the last six months. Financial need is a consideration. GPA requirement is 2.80. Application submission deadline is Feb. 15.

  3. ARTHUR LYNN TALK, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $500-1000/year, approximately five scholarships awarded, 2.75 GPA, major in a field of agriculture. Selection based on academic record, extra-curricular activities, and leadership.
  4. HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW AND RODEO ENDOWED SCHOLASHIP: $500-2000/year, awards to incoming freshmen, awards to junior college transfer students, awards to currently enrolled agriculture majors (number of awards may vary), 2.75 GPA, major in a field of agriculture. Selection criteria same as Talk scholarship.
  5. JAMES MARCUS SMITH ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: $500-1000/year, 2.75 GPA, Animal Husbandry/Animal Science majors, selection based on academic record, extra-curricular activities, and leadership.
  6. WILSON-WARNER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000-3000/year, 3.5 GPA, major in field of agriculture, other selection criteria based on academic record, extra-curricular activities, and leadership.
  7. WILLIE FRANK HALL TRUST SCHOLARSHIP: $1000-1500/year, two awards (may vary), 2.75 GPA, graduated in upper half of high school class, major in agricultural sciences seeking teacher certification, other selection criteria same as previous scholarship
  8. DEAN AND MRS. W.E. LOWRY ENDOWMENT LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000/year.  Recipient must be a full-time upper level undergraduate completing requirements for teacher certification in agriculture; have actively participated in the Collegiate FFA; be of good character; have demonstrated above average academic attainment. GPA of 3.00 is required.  Application deadline is April 1st.  For additional information, contact Dwayne Pavelock, agr_dxp@shsu.edu, 936-294-1215.
  9. SEITZ GIFT FRUIT/GOLDEN VALLEY FARMS SCHOLARSHIP: $500/year, two awards, 2.5 GPA, major in agricultural sciences seeking teacher certification, one awarded to senior prior to student teaching, the other awarded to a senior within the student teaching block.
  10. LETTS-HOPPER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500/year, one award, junior or senior, major in agricultural sciences, selected on the basis of character, academic achievement and financial need.
  11. CLEMON AND CAROLYN MONTGOMERY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500/year, one award, 2.75 GPA, major in agricultural sciences, selection based on demonstrated financial need.
  12. MYRON A. BALCOM INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies annually. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in industrial Technology; 3.0 GPA required; Deadline date for application submission is March 15th.
  13. EDGAR A. AND CAROLYN L. REEVES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000./year, recipient must be a sophomore, junior or senior majoring in Agriculture and demonstrate financial need, required grade point average is 3.00, deadline is March 20.
  14. BYRD FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF SHSU RODEO ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000./year, recipient must be full-time undergraduate students majoring in any discipline, be accepted into the Rodeo Program, and meet NIRA eligibility. Required grade point average is 2.0. Deadline date for application submission is March 20th.
  15. McCAFFETY ELECTRIC  COMPANY, INC. AGRICULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL SCIENCES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.   16. TEXAS BEST RODEO PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP: $1,500 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and majoring in any discipline; be accepted into the Rodeo Program; meet NIRA eligibility; and demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.25 is required.  Deadline date for application submission is July 1st.  For additional information contact the Agricultural Department; email: sfkelley@shsu.edu  
  17. DUCKS UNLIMITED OF HUNTSVILLE SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000. per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in Agriculture or Biology with a minor in Wildlife Ecology.  Required grade point average is 2.8.  Deadline date for application submission is March 15th.  Contact Dwayne Pavelock is Agricultural Sciences.
  18. DANNY AND CINDY PIERCE FAMILY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU and majoring in agricultural business.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Deadline date for application submission is March 15th.
  19. OAKES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies; Recipients must be "well-rounded", full-time students majoring in any discipline in the College of Business Administration; be a junior or senior, having completed at least 60 hours of coursework prior to the semester that the scholarship is received; and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to students from Limestone, Freestone or Leon Counties. If no students from these counties qualify for the scholarship, a student from central Texas may be considered.   3. BRANDON ASHLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Brandon Ashley Memorial Scholarship is available to a Senior majoring in criminal justice who plans to pursue a career in law enforcement. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  4. GEORGE J. BETO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP . The George J. Beto Memorial Scholarship is available to an international student or a member of a minority group (including women), who has demonstrated financial need and has satisfactorily met the standard entrance requirements established by the University. The student must be enrolled as a full-time criminal justice student at Sam Houston State University . Preference is given to especially needy students from lower-income families. Special consideration will be given to "first generation" college students. Preference will be given to undergraduate students, although graduate students will not be precluded. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  5. JAMES C. BOSWELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP . The James C. Boswell Scholarship may be granted for the fall and spring semesters to deserving undergraduate students in the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University who have demonstrated financial need and who are seeking to pursue a degree in law enforcement or affiliated criminal justice disciplines. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  6. JOHN R. BRANIFF SCHOLARSHIP: Amount of scholarship varies per year; Recipients must be an undergraduate student majoring in careers in the field of law enforcement. Preference will be give to those students who are residents of Austin, Brazos, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Harris, Liberty, Madison, Montgomery, Walker, Waller and Washington Counties. Students must maintain 3.0 GPA. Application Deadline: February 14th.
  7. TOM BROUSSARD, PH.D. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP . The Thomas Broussard Ph.D. Memorial Scholarship may be granted for the fall and spring semesters to academically deserving undergraduate or graduate students in the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University .   8. SARAH JANINE CLEARY AND MICHAEL GRIFFIN CLEARY SCHOLARSHIP . DIANE COCHRAN CRIMINAL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be an undergraduate or graduate student in good standing at SHSU entering an internship at a Criminal Justice agency, having completed two long semesters at SHSU. Applicants must demonstrate financial need as determined by the Coordinator of the Criminal Justice Internship Program and the College of Criminal Justice Student Development Committee. Recipient must have applied for and been admitted as an undergraduate criminal justice major of Sam Houston State University , and must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
  12. MICHELLE A. EDWARDS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: Recipients must be a full-time junior or senior female students in the fall semester the award will be disbursed and majoring in victim students. Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor. GPA requirement 3.0 overall and 3.25 in their major.
  13. O.B. ELLIS AND PHILIP GIBBS, M.D. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP . The Ellis-Gibbs Memorial Scholarship is available to female criminal justice majors between 21-45 of age who has attained a minimum of junior level undergraduate standing or are candidates for or working towards master's or doctoral degrees. Preference will be given to scholarship candidates with experience in the criminal justice profession. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  14. CHARLES M. FRIEL SCHOLARSHIP, VICTOR G. STRECHER SCHOLARSHIP, GEORGE G. AND GRACE KILLINGER SCHOLARSHIP, AND MARGARET FARNWORTH SCHOLARSHIP: These scholarships are granted for the fall and spring semesters to academically deserving undergraduate or graduate students in the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University . Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  15. JARED GRANT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: The Jared Grant Memorial Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to an undergraduate student in good standing, enrolled at Sam Houston State University and employed by the Criminal Justice Center . Students must maintain a grade point average of 2.5.
  16. KELLY HARRIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AND WAYLAND D. PILCHER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: These scholarships are granted for the fall and spring semesters to academically deserving undergraduate students in the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University . Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  17. LT. C.E. JORDAN, SR. SCHOLARSHIP: The Lt. C.E. Jordan, Sr. Scholarship may be granted for the fall and spring semesters only, to male or female criminal justice majors enrolled as an undergraduate at Sam Houston State University . Students receiving the scholarships must maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average in his/her studies, and must be enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours at Sam Houston State University, unless employed full time as a peace officer, in which case he/she must be enrolled in at least 9 semester hours. Other requirements of the scholarship are that the recipient be: (1) a United States Citizen and permanent resident of Texas; (2) a son, daughter, or legal ward of any peace officer or individual employed in areas related to or affiliated with the criminal justice field; (3) under 25 years of age, unless employed full time as a police officer, in which case the age limit is waived.
  18. MERLYN D. MOORE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be an entering freshman or a current full-time student enrolled at SHSU and majoring in Criminal Justice; demonstrate financial need; and demonstrate a strong academic background. Preference will be given to those students who are actively participating in any Criminal Justice organization. Application deadline Feb. 14.
  19. STEVE MOORE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: The Steve Moore Memorial Scholarship is available to a male or female criminal justice major, junior standing or above, who has completed at least one long semester at Sam Houston State University , is enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours, and has a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Both need and scholarship are considered.
  20. NATIONAL SOCIETY OF THE DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION: The National Society for the Daughters of the American Revolution Scholarship is available to a male or female criminal justice major. The recipient must be a sophomore, junior, or senior who has made a commitment to a criminal justice affiliated discipline. Recipients must meet the entrance requirements of the University and exhibit exceptional academic ability as certified by the scholarship committee. Recipients must possess high moral standards, and must have exemplified though high school and into college the qualities of maturity, community, leadership, and appreciation of the country. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  21. JUSTIN PERDUE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be an undergraduate student majoring in criminal justice at SHSU. GPA requirement 2.5. Application deadline Feb. 14.
  22. MICHAEL SCHULZE SCHOLARSHIP: The Michael Schulze Scholarship is available to a criminal justice major, junior standing or above, who has completed at least one long semester at Sam Houston State University , enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours, and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
  23. MELISSA RENEE SINCLAIR CRIMINAL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP: The Melissa Renee Sinclair Criminal Justice Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to students majoring in criminal justice at Sam Houston State University , with at least 72-80 semester hours earned. Recipient must be able to demonstrate financial need for scholarship and maintain an overall grade point average of 2.5.
  24. JASON W. STACHEY CRIMINAL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in Criminal Justice and demonstrate financial need. Entering freshmen must meet the minimum SAT/ACT score for undergraduate admissions. GPA requirement is 3.0
  25. TARGET SCHOLARSHIP OF EXCELLENCE: The Target Scholarship of Excellence will be awarded to three (3) students. One award will be given to a freshman who will be classified as a sophomore for the following academic year; another award will be given to a sophomore who will be classified as a junior the following academic year; another award will be given to a junior who will be classified as a senior the following academic year. The recipient must (1) be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in Criminal Justice; and (2) maintain an overall GPA of 3.0. Applicants will also be asked to provide a written response to one question agreed upon by the scholarship selection committee and the Donor representatives.

The Law Enforcement Assistance Program (LEAP) is available to law enforcement officers majoring in criminal justice and employed by an agency in Austin , Chambers, Fort Bend , Galveston , Harris, Liberty , Montgomery , Waller or Walker County . These scholarships are available to both male and female law enforcement majors, junior standing or above, who have completed at least one long semester at Sam Houston State University, enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours, and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.

PROJECT BLUE MARCUS LEE ZARUBA ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 minimum, to a full-time junior or senior student in good standing ; majoring in Criminal Justice, and maintain on overall minimum GPA of 3.0. $1,000 is to be awarded this spring and disburse 1/2 in fall semester 2013 and 1/2 in spring semester 2014. The other $1,000 is to be held in the scholarship fund for awarding in spring 2014.
  44. BRITTANY LYNN AVERITT CRIMINAL JUSTICE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Full time junior or senior student in good standing; majoring in any discipline from the College of Criminal Justice. Recipient must have graduated from a high school in Navarro County, TX; demonstrate a financial need. In any year there are no CJ majors from Navarro County, TX, the scholarship may be awarded to a student from another county that meets the selection criteria. GPA of 2.50 is required.

  2. BOBBY AND PATRICIA EZELL ENDOWED TEACHER EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time junior or senior student in good standing; be pursuing teacher certification at either the elementary or secondary level; be admitted to the educator preparation program; demonstrate financial need; have at the time of scholarship awarding and maintain a minimum overall PGS of 2.50.  Application deadline is February 15th. 
  3. DR. GERALDINE E. HYNES SCHOLARSHIP FUND:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time senior in good standing, majoring in English or Speech communication with a minor in Secondary education.  GPA of 3.25 is required. 
  4. ELIZABETH ANDREWS ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full-time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and has at least a 2.5 overall grade point average.
  5. ARMY SPECIALIZED TRAINING PROGRAM UNIT 4814 ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full-time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and provides documentation of having earned part of their university expenses, has at least a 2.5 overall grade point average and is willing to perform 3 to 5 hours per week service in the Academic Enrichment Center.
  6. BRYAN BAKER INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP FUND: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full-time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, is seeking to become certified at the secondary level, demonstrates financial need and has at least a 3.0 overall grade point average.
  7. KAREN GAIL CRAWFORD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $5,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time student in good standing majoring in elementary education; be classified as a junior or senior; demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to teaching at the elementary level by providing a 500-word essay explaining why he/she wants to teach young children.  Overall GPA of 2.5 is required.  GPA of 3.0 in major is required. 
  8. DAVID CURLEE ENLOE SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and maintains at least a 2.5 overall grade point average.
  9. ERMA KEEFER FARRIS ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and good character and maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average. Preference will be given to students who are life-long residents of Walker County.
  10. TEMPLETON GRUY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN EDUCATION: This award of $1,000/semester is intended for a "non-tradition" female undergraduate student who is enrolled full time, admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and maintains at least a 2.5 overall grade point average. (Requires a special one-to-two page essay describing the student's commitment to pursuing and obtaining teacher certification).
  11. ODELL WEATHERLY HALL EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and maintains at least a 2.5 overall grade point average.
  12. HERITAGE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates through letters of reference outstanding character and affiliation with an organized Christian religion, and maintains at least a 2.5 overall grade point average.
  13. JAMES L. AND BILLIE J. HICKMAN ENDOWED EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, maintains at least a 3.0 grade point average and is involved in extra-curricular activities that broadens the recipients experiences and life skills.
  14. VALINE HOBBS ELEMENTARY EDUCATION ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be an undergraduate full-time student in good standing at Sam Houston State University and majoring in Elementary Education. GPA of 3.00 is required.
  15. SUSAN SCHEMBER HOLTKAMP ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student seeking elementary education certification who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average.
  16. MARY COLLINS SANDEL SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who is seeking to be certified to teach at the elementary level, has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average.
  17. ROBERT ERIC SCHULTZ MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: This award of $300/every 3rd year is intended for a full time undergraduate student of sophomore, junior or senior level who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average. 
  18. MRS. BLANCHE MILLER SHAW SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually.   6. RUTHANNAH BROWN SCHOLARSHIP IN THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH: Amount varies. Must have graduated in the upper 15 percent of high school class. Must be an English major in the Bachelor of Arts degree with certification. Must have completed 23 semester hours at SHSU with an overall GPA of 3.0 and GPA in English of at least 3.3; also, 12 of the semester hours completed must be in English and a foreign language. Scholarship is renewable, subject to recommendation of scholarship committee.
  7. WELDON HALL, JR. ENDOWMENT IN ENGLISH: Amount varies. Scholarship is available to a Freshman student or transfer student who is enrolling at SHSU for the first time. Recipient must have graduated in the top ten percent of high school class, have a high school or community college GPA of at least 3.3, or have an ACT English score of at least 26. TEXAS REVIEW PRESS CREATIVE WRITING SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per year; Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate (sophomore, junior or senior) or graduate student majoring in English with a creative writing emphasis, and have a publishing background in poetry, fiction or creative non-fiction. GPA requirement 3.0 overall; 3.2 in major. Application submission deadline: April 15th.
  9. FOREIGN LANGUAGE PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP FUND: The scholarship fund was established in honor of Dr. Hanna Lewis upon her retirement from Sam Houston State University to provide financial assistance to worthy foreign language majors who have met the following criteria: Recipient must (1) be a full time student enrolled at Sam Houston State University, with a filed degree plan showing a major in Spanish, French, or German; (2) be a junior or senior with at least 30 semester hours in residence at Sam Houston State University; (3) maintain a 3.0 GPA or above in his/her major language; (4) and must have completed at least six advanced semester hours in his/her major language at SHSU. It is the Program's wish that the scholarship be awarded in a two-year cycle: alternate years in (1) Spanish and (2) French or German. The first scholarship was in Spanish, the second in French or German with the same sequence followed thereafter. If there are no eligible applicants in the year of a given language being the scholarship language, the scholarship will be awarded to a major in the other language(s).
  10.   4. ART ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: The Art Endowment Scholarship is awarded annually each spring semester. Students are nominated by faculty members and are then required to submit a portfolio for review by the faculty. Recipients are then selected based on grade point averages overall and in art and on artistic ability. Recipients of this award are also required to have a show exhibited their work during the first summer school semester in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery.
  5. MARJORIE LEVERTON BOEHME SCHOLARSHIP FOR ART STUDENTS: The Marjorie Leverton Boehme Scholarship for Art Students was established in 1999 by Marjorie Leverton Boehme to provide financial assistance Art students. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient of this scholarship. The recipient of this award must be a full time student at Sam Houston State University of Junior or Senior status majoring in Art.
  6. ELKINS LAKE KUNTZ-NELSON MEMORIAL ART SCHOLARSHIP: The Elkins Lake Kuntz-Nelson Memorial Art Scholarship Endowment was established in 1988 by the board of Elkins Lake Art League to enable young artists to pursue and encourage excellence in painting. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and paintings submitted for this scholarship may be of any medium. The recipient must maintain a 2.5 grade point average overall and a 3.0 in Art and have at least one full year of studies left to complete at Sam Houston State University. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art office.
  7. EDWARD GEESLIN ART SCHOLARSHIP: The Edward Geeslin Art Endowment was established in 1971 by retired professor Edward Davis Geeslin to encourage deserving young men and women of good character who have demonstrated their potential successful achievement as students and are in need of financial assistance. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient.
  8. RUTH WYNNE THOMASON HOLLINSHEAD ENDOWMENT FUND IN ART: The Ruth Wynne Thomason Hollinshead Endowment Fund in Art was established in 2002 in memory of Ruth Wynne Thomason Hollinshead. The recipient of this scholarship must be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in any discipline within the Art Department, demonstrate financial need, and maintain a 3.0 grade point average overall. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient.
  9. EMMETTE JACKSON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: The Emmette Jackson Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 in honor of Emmette Jackson to provide financial assistance to worthy photography majors. This scholarship is awarded annually each Spring and a committee of photography faculty shall select the recipient of the scholarship. Recipients must be enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in Photography, maintain a 2.5 grade point average overall, and be classified as a junior or senior.
  10. JESSE H. JONES AND MARY GIBBS JONES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: The Jesse H. Jones and Mary Gibbs Jones Endowed Scholarships are awarded to outstanding full-time resident Liberal Arts or Graphic Arts majors who have maintained a 3.0 grade point average at Sam Houston State University. Jesse H. Jones and Mary Gibbs Jones Endowed Scholars will receive $500 per semester for the fall and spring semester following the award.   12. CLEM OTIS MEMORIAL ART SCHOLARSHIP: The Clem Otis Memorial Art Scholarship Endowment was established by the Otis family in 1983 in honor of Mrs. Clem Otis. She was an accomplished landscape artist who touched the memories of people across the country with her oils and acrylics. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and paintings submitted for this scholarship must be done in oil. The recipient of this scholarship must have a 2.5 grade point average at Sam Houston State University.
  13. CHARLES PEBWORTH SCULPTURE SCHOLARSHIP: The Charles Pebworth Sculpture Endowment was established in 1993 in honor of Charles Pebworth’s 36 years of dedicated service, to enable young students to pursue their studies in sculpture. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty will provide nominations or students may nominate themselves by submitting a portfolio of sculptural works. The recipient of this scholarship must have a 3.0 grade point average in Art, exhibit outstanding abilities in sculpture and must have one full year of studies left to complete at Sam Houston State University.   14. POLLEY ART AWARDS: The Polley Art Award was established in 1970 by retired professor Joseph Polley Paine to encourage excellence in painting. Mr. Paine placed money from the sale of his paintings into this award fund during the last years of his teaching career and dedicated it to the memory of the Polley family and its Texas pioneer heritage. This scholarship is awarded annually during the spring semester, based on work that was completed during the immediately preceding fall semester painting class. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art office.
  15. JAMES B. AND MARILYN C. SHEPARD SCHOLARSHIP: The James B. and Marilyn C. Shepard Endowment Fund was established in 1999. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient. The recipient must be a native born US citizen, be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in Art and maintain a 2.5 grade point average overall. First preference will be for students studying sculpture.
  16. This is a four-year award as long as the recipient continues to meet the criteria. 2.0 GPA requirement.
  25. ELAINE McDONALD MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP: $300 per year. Scholarship established for students majoring in music and/or currently performing in a major ensemble in the School of Music (choir, band, orchestra, or accompanying). FEROL ROBINSON ENDOWMENT FOR TOMORROW'S JOURNALISTS: The following criteria will be used in the selection process: A recipient must (1) be full-time SHSU student, majoring in journalism; (2) submit a 500-word essay on his/her professional journalism goals and need for financial assistance; (3) represent the qualities of Dr. Robinson and show potential in journalism; and (4) maintain an overall GPA of 3.0. Recipients who re-apply in succeeding years submit an essay on what they have gained from the previous year's instruction. (Application deadline: MARCH 1)
  65. DR. FEROL ROBINSON JOURNALISM ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU majoring in journalism. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. GPA requirement 3.0. Application deadline March 1.
  66. KAILAS AND BECKY RAO SCHOLARSHIP in HONOR of DR. FEROL ROBINSON: recipient must (1) be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU, majoring in journalism; (2) maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 or, if a freshman student, have an overall high school GPA of 3.0; (3) provide evidence of involvement in community service; (4) have a clear criminal record; and (5) demonstrate personal integrity.   67. HAL FULGHAM SCHOLARSHIP: Awarded each year to a photography major. The recipient is the winner of "BEST PORTFOLIO" at the SHSU Photographic Society's Annual Statewide High School Photo Contest. The winner receives approximately $200. (Application deadline: MARCH 1)
  68. JOURNALISM ADVISORY COUNCIL INTERNSHIP FUND SCHOLARSHIP: A selection committee consisting of the Coordinator of the Journalism Program and the Chair of the Department of Public Communication shall select the recipients of the award each semester. The following criteria will be used in the selection process: A recipient must (1) be enrolled at SHSU, majoring in journalism; (2) have been selected to pursue an internship, and (3) have registered for JRN 498, Journalism Internship.   69. JOURNALISM AWARDS: This annual competition is open to journalism majors and minors. Judging is by practicing professionals in the area of the award. (Application deadline: April 1)
     
    • FEATURE STORY: Byline feature story of any length, with/without photos. Judges look for lively, well-constructed stories with strong reader appeal.

     

    • NEWS STORY: Bylined news story of any length, with/without photos. Judges will look for excellence in reporting, clarity in style and accuracy.

     

    • SPORTS WRITING: Byline sports story of any length, with/without photos. Judges will look for excellence in content, style, and background information.

     

    • PHOTOS: Individual news, sports or feature photos that accompanied a story or ran alone with a cut line or as part of a photo essay. Judges will consider composition, cropping, and print quality.

     

     

    • ADVERTISING: A product, service, or house ad written and produced in-house by one student (use of clip art is permissible). Judges will base their decision on excellence in copy writing, layout illustration and overall appeal.
  70. JUNIOR ALUMNI ANGEL SCHOLARSHIP: $250 for Fall tuition only. Receipt must be an official degree plan RTV (BFA/BA) major. Recipient must have also completed 65-96 hours (Junior status), 3.0 overall GPA, and 3.0 overall RTV GPA. Qualified candidates will submit a resume (including NBS, KSHU/CABLE 7 & internship involvement), a typed essay, official transcript, and a typed application form.(Application deadline: APRIL 1)
  71. KELLY EDGAR McADAMS & INA MAY OGLETREE McADAMS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies, must be senior students at SHSU, majoring in Journalism; meet all standard entrance requirements and maintain satisfactory academic progress; must have financial need.   73. MORRIS FRANK/DAN RATHER B.J. SCHOLARSHIP: $500 for tuition purposes. Award to Outstanding BFA Broadcast Journalism Major. Recipient should have completed or is currently enrolled in RTV 374 -- Broadcast Journalism I. Also, recipient should have a 2.5 overall GPA, 3.0 overall RTV GPA, and have on file an official RTV (BFA in Broadcast Journalism) degree plan.   78. HOUSTONIAN STAFF SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship is for student members of the Houstonian staff. It requires a commitment to continue working on staff. It is awarded based on financial need, contributions to the student newspaper and a grade point average of 2.5. THE MADISON WOLFE PHOTOGRAPHY SCHOLARSHIP FUND: The following criteria will be used in the selection process: A recipient must (1) be sophomore level/above; (2) have completed at least 6 photography hours in residence at SHSU; (3) appreciate and respect photography, whether or not that is his/her final career choice; (4) maintain an overall GPA of 2.5; and, (5) upon accepting the scholarship, students agree to submit at the end of each semester a one-page essay (100 words/more) relating to their academic growth and respect for photography. DEPARTMENT OF COLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

Sam Houston State University competes at the NCAA Division I level (I-AA in football) in 15 varsity sports. The Bearkats are members of the Southland Conference and have a tradition of excellence that includes national championships in baseball, golf and softball and NCAA playoff appearances in football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, golf and track and field. The intercollegiate sports in which SHSU fields teams are football, volleyball, men's/women's cross country, men's/women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's/women's golf, women's tennis, and men's/women's indoor/outdoor track and field. Athletic scholarships are offered in all sports.

HONORS PROGRAM

  1. ELLIOTT T. BOWERS SCHOLARSHIP: Available up to four years totaling up to $2800. Any student who has been accepted to the Elliott T. Bowers Honors Program and is currently in good standing within the program is eligible to apply.
  2. AUGUSTA LAWRENCE SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for two semesters. Any member of the Elliott T. Bowers Honors Program in good standing who will be a junior or senior is eligible to apply.
  3. ASSAM SCHOLARSHIP IN HONORS RESEARCH: $500 per year.  Recipient must be on Status One in the Honors College, in good standing and majoring in any discipline; submit a research paper or a poster to the Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium; and continue at SHSU at least one summer session or one long semester after the scholarship award is announced.  GPA of 3.25 is required.  Application deadline varies.

MILITARY SCIENCE (ROTC)

  1. ARMY RESERVE OFFICER'S TRAINING CORPS (ROTC) SCHOLARSHIPS: Army ROTC scholarships are merit-based and awarded on competitive basis. These scholarships cover all tuition and fees. In addition, each winner receives a flat rate of $450 annually for books. A student will also receive a subsistence allowance of up to $2000 each school year the scholarship is in effect. The period for requesting an application form for a four-year Army ROTC scholarship is from March 1 of a high school student's junior year through November 1 of a student's senior year. If the completed application is post-marked by July 15, the applicant will be considered for an early scholarship. Winners are announced about November 1. Eligibility requirements are:

    A. U.S. citizen
    B. Age 17 before the scholarship is effective.
    C. Taken the SAT or ACT no later than November of the year of application, have a minimum 850 SAT or composite 19 ACT.
    D. Good high school grades.
    E. Participate in leadership, extracurricular, and athletic activities (part-time jobs earn substitute credit).
    F. Under age 27 on June 30 of the expected graduation year (*Qualifying veterans may be granted an extension of up to four years).
    G. High school graduate or have equivalent credit.
    H. Agree to accept a commission in the U.S. Army.
    I. Agree to pursue Army approved academic major.
    J. Meet required physical standards.

  2. SCHUDER'S RANGER COMPANY SCHOLARSHIP: This $20,300 scholarship was created by Raymond Schuder and his wife, Vernon, for needy and deserving students participating in the Ranger Company while attending Sam Houston State University. To be considered as a recipient applicants must satisfy the following criteria: APPLICATION DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 15 & MARCH 30.
     

    A. Demonstrate financial need.
    B. Demonstrate good character.
    C. Maintain good scholarship and excellence, while representing SHSU through participation in the Ranger Company.
     

  3. THE COLONEL JOHN W. THOMASON JR., USMC, MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: This $10,000 endowed scholarship was created by the sisters of Colonel Thomason: Mrs. Sue T. Noordberg, Mrs. Emily T. Petersen, and Mrs. Margaret T. Cole. The scholarship includes a saber awarded to the future Bearkat Battalion Commander for the Fall semester. To be considered as a recipient applicants must satisfy the following criteria: 1) Enrolled as a contracted Military Science III Cadet in the necessary to assume command of the BearKat Battalion, and 3) Maintain good scholarship and excellence while representing SHSU through the Army ROTC Program.
  4. TWO OR THREE YEAR RESERVE FORCES DUTY SCHOLARSHIP: Eligibility requirements are the same as the four year scholarship except that applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (at application time and time of receivership). Three year applicants must have a qualifying SAT/ACT score, two year applicants do not require a SAT/ACT score. APPLICATION DEADLINE: CONTACT U.S. ARMY RECRUITER.
  5. JAMES DENNIS BAZAN MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT:  A Military Science student must be enrolled in the Bearkat Battalion the following fall and spring and in good standing at SHSU. Student must maintain an overall 2.25 GPA and demonstrate financial need.
  6. COPELAND MILITARY SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP: Well provide two $250 annual awards each year. Recipient must be minoring in Military Science. 2.5 GPA required. APPLICATION DEADLINE: APRIL 15.
  7. COLONEL JOHN A. AND GEANIE L. MCMANNERS ROTC SCHOLARSHIP; recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior student, majoring in any discipline, and a member of the ROTC program. Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor; $1,000/year and must maintain a grade point average or 2.50 or better; deadline is 1 February.
  8. MARCUS LUTTRELL MILITARY SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year. Recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior or senior student in good standing and majoring in any discipline; be a member of the ROTC program at SHSU; be contracted to become a commissioned officer; and, demonstrate leadership.  Financial need will be a consideration, but not a determining factor.  Applicants must read the book, "Lone Survivor; The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heros of SEAL Team 10" by Marcus Luttrell, and write a one-page essay on how this book influenced their lives and write the essay after receiving notification of the award.  GPA of 2.80 is required the first year; 2.90 the 2nd year; 3.00 the 3rd year. Application deadline is March 1st.

OFFICE OF UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS

  1. PHI THETA KAPPA TRANSFER SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 scholarship for one year ($500 per semester) on a competitive basis to one Phi Theta Kappan. Recipient must: have completed a minimum of 45 hours at a junior or community college; maintain a 3.5 GPA each semester for the duration of the one-year scholarship; be a full-time student(minimum 12 credit hours per semester) at SHSU; transfer directly from a community or junior college; be a Phi Theta Kappa member in good standing at the time of transfer; become an active member of the Beta of Texas Alumni Chapter of SHSU.

  1. DR. STUDENT SERVICES

  1. MIKE MAHON MEMORIAL RUGBY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year. Must be a full-time junior or senior student in good standing, major in any discipline, maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 and be a member of the SHSU Rugby Team. Application deadline is July 15th.
  2. JAY SHEPARD MEMORIAL RUGBY SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate in good standing; major in any discipline incoming freshman must meet University standards of admission with rugby experience. GPA of 2.00 is required. Application deadline is July 15th.
  3. SHSU PARENTS' ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT: $1,000 per year. Recipient must be full-time undergraduate student in good standing, majoring in any discipline; with 12 or more credit hours, maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 and have a family member in the SHSU Parents' Association. Financial aid will be considered but not a determining factor.
