  1. SPECIAL GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: $1,500 per semester.  Recipient must be a Sam Houston State University student enrolled full-time and an on-campus graduate student. To be competitive for the scholarship, applicants should have an undergraduate/graduate GPA of at least 3.2 and have GRE Verbal and Quantitative scores of 50% rank or higher.  An international student applying for this scholarship must have an established Sam Houston State University GPA or a formal transcript evaluation on file.  Nomination/Application Form is used ONLY for this scholarship award.  Application deadlines:  Fall Semester - April 1; spring Semester - November 1.  For additional information, contact Tammy Gray, 936-294-1230.

DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL SCIENCES

The department is pleased to have available the scholarships listed below.  Scholarships are one-time awards and are not automatically renewable (Exceptions: Ann T. and Charles T. Mallery Endowed Scholarship; San Antonio Livestock Exposition Scholarship).  A student may reapply in subsequent years if eligibility requirements are met.  Students MUST be registered for six or more agricultural science hours each semester or forfeit the scholarship for that semester.

The ScholarX program must be used to apply for departmental scholarships.  The program enables you to apply for all scholarships for which you are eligible, including those outside the Department of Agricultural and Industrial Sciences.  the deadline for departmental scholarships is April 1; non-departmental scholarship deadlines vary.  The following link will redirect you to the ScholarX program:  ScholarX Application

Agricultural Science Scholarships:

 

  1. ARTHUR LYNN TALK, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $500-1000/year, approximately five scholarships awarded, 2.75 GPA, major in a field of agriculture. Selection based on academic record, extra-curricular activities, and leadership.
  2. HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW AND RODEO ENDOWED SCHOLASHIP: $500-2000/year, awards to incoming freshmen, awards to junior college transfer students, awards to currently enrolled agriculture majors (number of awards may vary), 2.75 GPA, major in a field of agriculture. Selection criteria same as Talk scholarship.
  3. SAN ANTONIO LIVESTOCK EXPOSITION SCHOLARSHIP: $10,000/4 years, awards to incoming freshman only, two awards given annually, major in a field of agriculture, 12 credit hours per semester minimum, 3.0 GPA, Texas residents only. Must comply with S.A.L.E. requirements.
  4. JAMES MARCUS SMITH ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: $500-1000/year, 2.75 GPA, Animal Husbandry/Animal Science majors, selection based on academic record, extra-curricular activities, and leadership.
  5. WILSON-WARNER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000-3000/year, 3.5 GPA, major in field of agriculture, other selection criteria based on academic record, extra-curricular activities, and leadership.
  6. WILLIE FRANK HALL TRUST SCHOLARSHIP: $1000-1500/year, two awards (may vary), 2.75 GPA, graduated in upper half of high school class, major in agricultural sciences seeking teacher certification, other selection criteria same as previous scholarship.
  7. DEAN AND MRS. W.E. LOWRY ENDOWMENT LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000/year.  Recipient must be a full-time upper level undergraduate completing requirements for teacher certification in agriculture; have actively participated in the Collegiate FFA; be of good character; have demonstrated above average academic attainment. GPA of 3.00 is required.  Application deadline is April 1st.  For additional information, contact Dwayne Pavelock, agr_dxp@shsu.edu, 936-294-1215.
  8. SEITZ GIFT FRUIT/GOLDEN VALLEY FARMS SCHOLARSHIP: $500/year, two awards, 2.5 GPA, major in agricultural sciences seeking teacher certification, one awarded to senior prior to student teaching, the other awarded to a senior within the student teaching block.
  9. LETTS-HOPPER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500/year, one award, junior or senior, major in agricultural sciences, selected on the basis of character, academic achievement and financial need.
  10. CLEMON AND CAROLYN MONTGOMERY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500/year, one award, 2.75 GPA, major in agricultural sciences, selection based on demonstrated financial need.
  11. ANN CRUMP AND CHARLES T. MALLERY AGRIBUSINESS UNDERGRUATE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies annually, and recipient must have a 3.0 GPA. Recipient must be a full-time entering freshman student, majoring in Agribusiness, demonstrate financial need, be a high performing high school student with demonstrated involvement in extra-curricular activities and community service, and be a natural born citizen of the United States.
  12. EDGAR A. AND CAROLYN L. REEVES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000./year, recipient must be a sophomore, junior or senior majoring in Agriculture and demonstrate financial need, required grade point average is 3.00, deadline is March 20.
  13. DUCKS UNLIMITED OF HUNTSVILLE SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000. per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in Agriculture or Biology with a minor in Wildlife Ecology.  Required grade point average is 2.8.  Deadline date for application submission is March 15th.  Contact Dwayne Pavelock is Agricultural Sciences.
  14. DANNY AND CINDY PIERCE FAMILY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU and majoring in agricultural business.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Deadline date for application submission is March 15th.
  15. RICHARD "DICK" WALLRATH SCHOLARSHIP:  $2,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student (12 hours) or graduate student (9 hours) in good standing, majoring in any discipline, be accepted into the Ranch Horse Program at SHSU; comply with the Collegiate Stock Horse of Texas Association eligibility requirements.  GPS of 2.50 is required.  Application deadline is March 15th.  For additional information, contact Stanley F.   21. ANSLOW BRYANT CONSTRUCTION ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing and majoring in Industrial Technology with a preference given to students in Construction Management.  Financial need will be a consideration but not a determining factor.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Application deadline is April 1st.  For additional information, contact the Agricultural and Industrial Sciences Department, 936-294-1215.
  22. DR. HERB SCHUMANN LEADERSHIP ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  Amount varies.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing when they make their application and at the time of the award; be a student teacher obtaining certification to teach high school agriculture when they receive the scholarship benefits; demonstrate financial need; have completed at least two full academic years at SHSU; have previously assisted in conducting Leadership Development Events (LDEs) as a student in an agricultural education-based course at SHSU; be a student teacher member of the Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas (VATAT).  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Application deadline is April 1st and should be made via ScholarX.  For additional information, contact Dwayne Pavelock, agr_dxp@shsu.edu, 936-294-1186.

 

SHSU Rodeo Scholarships:
 

  1. BYRD FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF SHSU RODEO ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000./year, recipient must be full-time undergraduate students majoring in any discipline, be accepted into the Rodeo Program, and meet NIRA eligibility. Required grade point average is 2.0. Deadline date for application submission is March 20th.
  2. TOMMY CASTENSON SCHOLARSHIPS: $1000/year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing and majoring in any discipline; be accepted into the Rodeo Program; and meet NIRA eligibility requirements.  GPS of 2.0 is required.  July 1st is deadline date for application submission.  For additional information, contact Bubba Miller, elm014@shsu.edu, 936-294-3867.
  3. COPENHAGEN/SKOAL -- U.S. TOBACCO SCHOLARSHIPS: $2000-5000/year, number of awards varies, awarded to NIRA winners at regional and national level.
  4. SONNY SIKES RODEO and the SIKES FAMILY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies; Recipient must be full-time undergraduate or graduate students, majoring in any discipline, be accepted into the SHSU Rodeo Program, and meet NIRA eligibility. 2.0 GPA requirement. Application submission deadline March 15.
  5. RODEO CLUB ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP: $300/semester, number of awards varies, awarded for one semester.
  6. TEXAS BEST RODEO PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP: $1,500 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and majoring in any discipline; be accepted into the Rodeo Program; meet NIRA eligibility; and demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.25 is required.  Deadline date for application submission is July 1st.  For additional information contact the Agricultural Department; email: sfkelley@shsu.edu  
  7. WESLEY NEYLAND MEMORIAL ENDOWED RODEO SCHOLARSHIP: $500/year, one award, 2.25 minimum GPA, agricultural sciences major, competitor in the sport of college rodeo

JOSHUA FARRIS MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $2,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate in good standing and majoring in any discipline; be a competing member of the SHSU rodeo team; and have the same values and exhibit the same behavior as that of Joshua.  GPA of 2.50 is required. Application deadline is April 1st and should be made in ScholarX.  For additional information, contact the Agricultural Department, 936-294-1215.

  3. McCAFFETY ELECTRIC  COMPANY, INC. AGRICULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL SCIENCES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year. DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES (BIOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE)
 

At present, all scholarships offered by the Department of Biological Sciences have the following common criteria:

  • A. Student must pursue, in acceptable sequence, a Biology or Environmental Science curriculum at SHSU, or student must have been accepted into the Pre-Professional Studies Program as a Biology major at SHSU, as outlined in the university catalog;
  • B. Student must be a full-time student in residence (minimum 12 semester hours) at SHSU;
  • C. Student must maintain a B average;
  • D. Student must enroll in a minimum of one Biology and one Chemistry class each semester; and
  • E. Student must sign and return Scholarship Agreement form.
  1. BIOLOGY & ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester, two consecutive semesters, four to six awards, sophomore, junior, or senior status, 3.0 GPA, spring semester contingent upon maintaining B average.
  2. BIOLOGY & ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester, two consecutive semesters, two to four awards for beginning freshmen in upper 25 percent of high school graduating class, minimum score of 1000 on SAT or 24 on ACT; must maintain 3.0 GPA at SHSU, spring semester contingent upon maintaining B average.
  3. CLAUDE MCLEOD ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP: $500-$750 per semester, two consecutive semesters, junior or senior status, 3.0 GPA, spring semester contingent upon maintaining B average.
  4. EMMA NORMAND ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP: $500-$750 per semester, two consecutive semesters, junior or senior status, 3.0 GPA, spring semester contingent upon maintaining B average.
  5. JAMES D. LONG BIOLOGY ENDOWMENT: Endowment is established to provide student academic scholarships and support for student research projects in the Dept of Biological Sciences. Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to receive assistance from this endowment, as are entering freshmen. Applicants for Long Student Research Awards must submit a written proposal in the format specified by the selection committee and approved by a supervising faculty member indicating how the award will be used. Amount unspecified, 3.0 GPA required.
  6. PATRICK NEIL O'BRYANT ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year. Recipient must be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in Environmental Science, or in the event there is no qualified Environmental Science major, the recipient may major in Biological Science with an interest in Environmental Science; demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.50 is required.
  7. JAMES PATRICK WEBER ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AWARD: $200 fall semester only, 3.0 GPA, sophomore, junior, or senior Environmental Science major.
  8. S.R. WARNER ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP: $500-$750 per semester, two consecutive semesters, junior or senior status, 3.0 GPA, spring semester contingent upon maintaining B average.
  9. TURNER BIOLOGY/ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP: $600 per year; Recipient must be a full-time student accepted or enrolled at Sam Houston State University and have transferred from a community college or is an international student. Recipient must have maintained an overall GPA of 3.0 over the previous two consecutive semesters and continue to maintain an overall 3.0 GPA. Financial need is a consideration but not a determining factor in the selection process.
  10. WILSON-WARNER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN THE BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES: $1000-1500 per semester two consecutive semesters, one or two awards, sophomore, junior, or senior status, 3.5 GPA, spring semester contingent upon maintaining a B average.
  11. EVERETT WILSON BIOLOGY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate, graduate or transfer student from a community college, or an international student, majoring in biology or pre-professional studies, and demonstrate financial need.  Preference will be given to a qualifying international student.  Two letters of recommendation from professors who are well-acquainted with the applicant must accompany the scholarship application.  3.0 GPA required.  Application deadline is February 1.
  12. EMMA NORMAND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student, in good standing, enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in biological sciences, and demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.5 is required.
  13. DR. HAROLD F. FOERSTER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in biology or environmental science, demonstrate financial need, and be a citizen of the United States.  GPA of 3.00 is required.  For additional information, contact Dr. Everett Wilson, LDB 107, (936)294-1555, email: bio_edw@shsu.edu

  9. ROBERT A. WELCH FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIPS: Chemistry major or Chemistry minor, enrolled in CHM 495 and participating in an undergraduate research program.
  10. EARL H. BURROUGH ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Number of scholarships and amounts vary. Applicants must be majoring in Chemistry or Physics, native born U.S. citizen and a resident of Texas, full-time enrollment at SHSU (not including elective hours), an overall 3.60 GPA, and demonstrate financial need.

  2. CANNAN GEOLOGICAL SCHOLARSHIPS: $600 per year, junior or senior status, Geology majors, minimum GPA of 3.2 in Geology and overall 3.0, faculty recommendations required.

Mathematics Scholarships:

  1. BREWTON SCHOLARSHIPS: Awarded on basis of achievement and potential. Selections made by SHSU mathematics faculty. APPLICATION AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.
    • Study toward teacher certification at the secondary level: $400.-$1000. per year, Mathematics major, enrolled in secondary education program. (NOTE: High school students and two-year college students may apply for support if they will satisfy these conditions when they enroll at SHSU.)
    • Study toward teach certification at the elementary level: $100.-$400. per year, Mathematics minor, enrolled in elementary education program. (NOTE: High school students and two-year college students may apply for support if they will satisfy these conditions when they enroll at SHSU.)
    • Summer Study: $200 -$400 summer sessions, Texas school teachers seeking to improve their mathematics teaching credentials.
             
  2. GLENDA J. ST. ANDRIE SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT: Amount varies per year.  Recipient must be a full-time student enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in mathematics or statistics, and must demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 3.00 is required.  Deadline for application submission is before 3/21 (The Honors Committee meets to discuss recipients and decisions are made before the Honors Banquet held in April.  Announcements are made on that day.)  For more information contact the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, 936-294-1564, angie@shsu.edu.
  3. DAN REEVES JR. SCHOLARSHIP: $500 - $700 per year (amount varies) to majors in mathematics. Selections made by SHSU Mathematics faculty. Application not necessary.
  4. FRANKLIN D. RICH SCHOLARSHIP: $500 - $700 per year, two awards (amount varies) to majors in Statistics. Selections made by SHSU Mathematics & Statistics faculty. Application not necessary.
  5. JOHN VON NEUMANN AWARD: $100 - $500 per year (amount varies) to majors in mathematics, computing science, or physics. Selections made by SHSU Mathematics & Statistics faculty. Application not necessary.
  6. GREATER TEXAS FOUNDATION MATH AND SCIENCE TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP: $2,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and specializing in science or mathematics teaching; demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Application deadline is February 15th. 
  7. DR. FRANK P. LEATHERS MATH OR SCIENCE TEACHER EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP:  $14,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman student in good standing; majoring in math or one of the sciences (biology, chemistry, geology and geography, or physics) with a minor in secondary education seeking teacher certification; as a sophomore the recipient must qualify for admission to the Educator Preparation Program; juniors and seniors must be accepted to the Educator Preparation Program; be committed to teaching high school math or science; demonstrate strong financial need.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Application deadline is February 1st.

Computer Science Scholarships:

  1. COMPUTER SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP: $200 - $400 per year, three to four awards (amount varies) to majors in Computing Science at SHSU. Application not necessary.*
  2. JOHN VON NEUMANN AWARD: $100-$500 per year (amount varies) to majors in mathematics, computing science, or physics. Application not necessary.*
  3. JOHNNIE COOK KELLY SCHOLARSHIP: $200 - $400 per year, two awards (amount varies) to majors in Computing Science at SHSU. Application not necessary.*
  4. KAILAS & BECKY RAO SCHOLARSHIP IN HONOR OF MR. ALBERT KIDD: $1800 per year. Awarded to a full-time senior enrolled in the Senior Thesis course at Sam Houston State University. Applicants must provide evidence of involvement in community service, have a clear criminal record and demonstrate personal integrity. Financial need is not a determining factor in selecting the recipient, but a student demonstrating financial need may receive priority in the selection process. 3.0 GPA requirement.   5. MOHAMED AHMED NOMAN ENDOWMENT FUND: Amount will vary, dependent upon available funds; established in memory of Mohaned Noman to honor his love of life and commitment to education. GPA requirement of 3.0 or higher in major. Application not necessary.*
  6. SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIV. COMPUTER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be an incoming freshman, transfer student or graduate student (or a combination) in good standing and majoring in Computer Science; demonstrated financial need; preference given to a student graduating in the top 10% of their class, whose overall GPA is 3.0 or higher.  GPA of 2.70 for undergraduates or 3.0 for graduates is required.  For additional information, contact Peter Cooper, email; cooper@shsu.edu

* Students need not apply for CS scholarships. Each spring all officially registered CS majors are automatically considered for scholarships. Recipients are normally selected during the Spring semester with the actual award presented the following fall or fall/spring.

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS
 

  1. FRESHMAN SCHOLARSHIPS IN PHYSICS: $400 per semester. Available to freshman physics majors only. Other requirements are 1000+ on SAT and were in the top 25 percent of their high school graduating class.
  2. L. MARCUS RIGBY AWARD: $800 award. Awarded to best student performance in Physics 141, 242, and 243 sequence. Recipient must return to SHSU the semester after receiving award.
  3. OUTSTANDING JUNIOR PHYSICS MAJOR AWARD: $800 award. Recipient must have a 3.0 overall GPA and must return to SHSU the semester after receiving award.
  4. OUTSTANDING SENIOR PHYSICS MAJOR AWARD: $800 cash award. Recipient must have a 3.0 overall GPA or above.
  5. FACULTY SCHOLARSHIP: $200 awarded by the Physics department faculty to an outstanding physics major.
  6. OUTSTANDING ASTRONOMY STUDENT: $200 - This award is given to an outstanding astronomy student.
  7. EARL H BURROUGH ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Number of scholarships and amounts vary. Applicants must be majoring in Chemistry or Physics, native born U.S. citizen and a resident of Texas, full-time enrollment at SHSU (not including elective hours), an overall 3.60 GPA, and demonstrate financial need.
  8. CHAIRMAN'S AWARD: This $400 scholarship is awarded to any declared physics majors maintaining a 3.5 or better GPA.
  9. JEREMY AND CAMILLE DUMOIT PHYSICS SCHOLARSHIP FUND: $500 per year.  Recipient must be a part-time or full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in physics.  Preferences will be given to students taking a minimum of 12 semester credit hours.  GPA of 3.50 is required.  For additional information email: phy-glp@shsu.edu
  10. JERRY AND JAN CALVERT PHYSICS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate in good standing, majoring in Physics and demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 3.00 is required.  Application deadline is March 1st.  For additional information, contact the Department of Physics; (936)294-1601).
  11. ROBERT AND ERIN STEELE SCIENCES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $3,000 per year.  Recipient must demonstrate financial need; be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing; major in physics or Engineering with preference given to participants in the 3/2 program.  If there are no applicants in Physics or Engineering, another science major may be considered, with preference given to participants in the 3/2 program; be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.  GPA of 2.80 is required.  Application deadline is August 1st.  For additional information, contact the Department of Physics, phy_glp@shsu.edu or (936-294-1601).

DEPARTMENT OF NURSING

  1. ALVIN AND ANGELINE JASIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND: $1,500 per year. Recipients must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing, majoring in Pre-Nursing until Sam Houston State establishes a Nursing Program, at which time the major will be Nursing. GPA of 3.00 is required.
  2. DR. SAM BARNES KAPLAN REVIEW SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,799.00 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing, enrolled at Sam Houston State University for at least 30 hours, majoring in any discipline, and be coded as pre-medical; maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.4, a minimum overall GPA in all science coursework of 3.4, and have no grade below a C in any prerequisite coursework.  Application deadline is October 15th.  For additional information email: MedicalPrograms@shsu.edu
  3. RYLIE ELISE RINGER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time junior or senior student (at the time they receive the funding) in good standing, majoring in nursing; be admitted into the Nursing Program; demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.50/3.00 is required.  Application deadline is 09/30/11.
The number and/or amount of each award are determined by the amount of income earned on the respective scholarship endowment.
