Course Credit Hours All English graduate classes at Sam Houston State University carry an award of three credit hours. Transfer Credit Hours A student may typically transfer in up to six graduate hours from an accredited institution. Only courses with an earned grade of B or better can be counted as transfer credit. The individual is awarded credit for course equivalents at Sam Houston State University. For example, a student who took a three-hour Victorian literature course at another university would be given credit for ENG 580; a student who took a three-hour technical and professional communications class would be given credit for ENG 590. Of course, to prevent “double-dipping,” the Department prohibits the student from taking the same course again at Sam Houston State. A student who wishes to transfer in credit hours should contact the Director of Graduate Studies in English, who will fill out and submit the appropriate paperwork. However, the student may not transfer in the hours officially until after he or she has Declared a Major and established degree candidacy. (Before that time, the Registrar has no degree plan to which to apply the transfer credits.) A student who enters the English Graduate Program with a Master’s degree from Sam Houston State University in another field may apply up to nine graduate hours from the previous degree to the English MA. These hours would typically be applied to the graduate minor for those students working under Plan II. See MA Degree Plans.
