Comments From Our Recently Initiated Brothers
Fall 1998

I think true brotherhood is a bond with special people, a bond that cannot be taken or touched by anything that may happen. Brotherhood is bigger than any friendship will ever be. Even though you may have grown up your whole life with someone, they will still never share with you something so sacred as the bond that we will share. I have shared a bond with family members such as my sister, but when she was killed in a car accident I felt like something was taken away from me. I know that the bond with my sister can never be replaced, but I also know that the bond that I share with my pledge brothers can never be taken away from me no matter what happens. Sigma Chi has taught me how to struggle and love, and these bonds I’m making right now are ones that I will never lose. Sigma Chi has taught me how to look into someone’s heart. (Bryan Salinas, Best Pledge)

For me, brotherhood is not knowing any of my pledge brothers in September and having an unbreakable bond with 23 guys in November. I have never experienced such a feeling. It is also doing what you can for your brothers, because you know good and well they will be there for you if you ever need them. True brotherhood is missing your pledge brothers when you’re away from them. It’s having a second family in case yours ever falls through. It’s knowing that we share the same bond and love for Sigma Chi and that feeling can never be taken away. I have never had such intense emotions with such close friends; that’s how powerful brotherhood can be. I can’t even begin to explain how much it means to me, but I know that our pledge class has it. I can feel it, and I wouldn’t substitute it for any feeling in the world. (Tommy Thompson)

To me friendship is stronger between people of like mind because it is a friendship based on a common belief in an ideal not just some common interests. This means that if two people were friends because of a love for a hobby and one loses interest, then the friendship will probably be lost too, because their common interest in that hobby is gone. But if two people share a common belief in an ideal and a code of conduct, then even though they may have differing interests in certain aspects of life, they know they will always be able to count on each other and be able to look to the other for support. This is what the Spirit of Sigma Chi is in my mind; that’s what it means to me. (Paul Richmond)

All through the history of Sigma Chi there have been men of diverse backgrounds and at Epsilon Psi there is no difference in that part of history. In my pledge class alone we have men from various-sized towns, ethnic groups, and ways of life. I believe that no man who does not live up the Jordan Standard should be a part of my chapter. During my pledgeship, I have made many friends, people I would have never met if it weren’t for Sigma Chi. My chapter has taught me to understand others and to realize the importance of justice. Learning various insights throughout my pledgeship has opened my eyes to how important they are not only to Sigma Chi, but in life. (Keith Miller)

I am an only child so I have never had a brother, until now. Now I can honestly say that I have over twenty brothers. Brotherhood to me means many things. First, a brother is someone who will go out and have a good time with you on the weekends. But in return will also be there when your car breaks down 100 miles from where he is. A brother is there for you when you have no money and need a place to stay until you get back on your feet again. A brother is your best man in your wedding. Brotherhood is something that can’t be duplicated by any other friendship. My brothers mean everything to me and there is not one thing I wouldn’t do to help my brothers. (Chris Moore)

Brotherhood is many things. Brotherhood is the bond between men, that through thick and thin, is everlasting. Brotherhood is when a fellow brother is in need of something he can always count on you. Brotherhood means to me a special bond between my fellow pledges and me. One thing that I have learned from pledgeship is brotherhood. I have learned to sacrifice for others, and others have learned to sacrifice for me. Brotherhood means to me having a family that I can always count on, and when I’m down or in trouble, I can rely on. (Jason Coker)

True brotherhood to me means having a group of guys that you can depend on. It means having friends there to talk to about anything, men you can grow with and be with. True brotherhood should offer a sense of security--a kind of safe house--whether it be physical, emotional or financial. Brotherhood to me should be unconditional and everlasting. A bond that is never broken! (Jason Sphon)

True brotherhood is being there through thick and thin for one another. Picking each other up and making the right decisions for the good of the fraternity. It’s not us using the name "Sigma Chi," it’s Sigma Chi using our names when we do the right thing. Going to bat for your brother, teaching, learning, and surviving in this world together. Being a good-standing citizen for others to admire and strive for. (Derek Haynes)

True brotherhood is something different to each and every one of us. To me it means that brothers will always be there for you, that you can share anything that happens to you not to one brother but to all Brothers, that I can trust and rely on every brother in the chapter. Also brotherhood is when you sit down and expand your mind with each other. To me that is what true brotherhood is. (Jonathan Bohannon)

The Epsilon Psi Chapter of Sigma Chi has made me into a better person by teaching me, and making me want to live by the Jordan Standard. The friendship is there: I have never been as close to anyone as I am to my pledge brothers. I came into pledgeship thinking I would never get along with these guys, but in the end I ended up loving every one of them. (Bo Dise)

The fraternity builds friendships by putting a group of men together who don’t know each other--from different backgrounds, from different places. Pledgeship builds friendship and bonds. This is an example of brotherhood. The fraternity also gives you a standard to follow and to live by to be yourself as a person. It teaches you to be responsible and to take care of your business. (Scott Brown)

True brotherhood is having love, trust and honor in one another. It is also being different, yet having at least one similarity--belief in Sigma Chi. I am an only child so I didn’t really know what true brotherhood was until I pledged Sigma Chi. Now I can see that it is more than just friendship; it is the deepest respect for one another possible. (Slater Bass)

True brotherhood is giving 100% to Sigma Chi. Dedication to your brothers and your chapter is brotherhood. Brotherhood is created because we as Sigma Chi’s have one thing in common and one thing we all can share--a common bond in Sigma Chi. And because of this, we are brothers and must treat each other like brothers--like blood brothers. As a brother you have a lifelong commitment to Sigma Chi, just like you have a commitment to your family. (Mark Hopkins)
