General Information

Education students are seeking a degree along with certification. The degree program is determined by SHSU, the certification program is set forth by the State of Texas and the State Board of Education Certification (SBEC).

Academic Studies Majors (students seeking Elementary certifications)

The Academic Advisement Center, working together with the Departments of Curriculum & Instruction, and Language, Literacy and Special Populations, are interested in getting to know our students and discovering ways to facilitate their success. Academic Studies majors (students seeking Elementary certifications) have two advisors, a general advisor in the Academic Studies Advisement Center, and a second advisor - their Faculty Program Advisor.

Secondary Education (students seeking certification to teach high school)

Secondary Education students also have two advisors. The primary advisor in the major field of study (e.g. history, English, biology, etc.) and an education advisor assigned by the Department of Curriculum & Instruction.

All education students are encouraged to meet regularly with their advisors to ensure positive, successful completion of educational and certification goals; and to regularly be informed of changes in program requirements or degree plans.
