Education Advisement Center Incoming Freshmen Students interested in seeking a degree in education are encouraged to meet with one of the advisors in the Education Advisement Center early in the SHSU admission process to discuss Educator Preparation Program requirements. Educator Preparation Program Admission Requirements Ensuring Your Success Developing good study habits and time management skills is a great way to ensure your success at SHSU. You can attend workshops that the SAM Center (AB4 2nd Floor) offers throughout the semester. Study habits - Learning to develop and maintain good study habits is important for all college students. You should study smarter, not harder, and learn techniques that work for you. In high school, you were taught by teachers that were trained to be teachers and to be able to guide you in learning the material. In College, most professors are specialist in their field and may not have been through an educator preparation program. Therefore, as a student, you will be required to spend more time studying the material in order to learn the subject. Time management - Learning to balance the time between studying and being with friends can be tough. For most students, it is the first time to be away from home and since parents are not around to check the status of assignments, it is easy to let time slip away. If you learn to manage your time wisely, then you will have plenty for studying and friends. Procrastination - Most students tend to procrastinate because they have difficulty understanding the material or do not realize the amount of time assignments require. Meet with your professors; get to know them and don't be afraid to ask questions. Each professor has scheduled office hours, usually posted on his/her syllabus and outside his/her office door. If you do not feel comfortable asking your question(s) in class, meet with the professor during his/her office hours for one-on-one questions and answers or help with projects and assignments. Advisement - All education students need to seek advisement every semester to keep up with any changes in the education program and to make sure program and certification plans are followed precisely. The State of Texas mandates our Educator Preparation Program, therefore, when the state government changes, there may also be changes in the program. This normally does not cause significant changes, but it is best to be advised every semester to keep up with the latest information. Recommended Courses for Freshmen Year First Semester
