Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction

Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction
With an Early Childhood Education Emphasis

This degree plan is designed primarily for the elementary teacher. All such degrees originate in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Students pursuing this plan should either hold elementary teacher certification or complete it prior to being awarded the degree. The degree plan requires the completion of a minimum of thirty-six hours of graduate credit, thirty hours of which must be in courses numbered 500 or above.

The major consists of eighteen to twenty-four semester hours in Education, which are approved in conference with the early childhood graduate advisor.

The minor consists of fifteen semester hours in early childhood education. Administration, Counseling, and Library Science, for which no prerequisite hours are necessary.

A comprehensive examination covering course work in Education and the minor field must be taken and passed prior to graduation.

In addition to the above, a specialized program in Early Childhood Education is available for the student who holds a Texas Provisional Elementary or Vocational Home Economics teaching certificate. For more information, please contact the Department of Language, Literacy and Special Populations.

Admission Procedures: Applications for admission to the Graduate School are available from the Coordinator of Graduate Studies, Box 2478, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas 77341-2478; telephone 936.294.1971.

To be regularly admitted to the program, applicants must:

1. Complete an application.

2. Submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, both undergraduate and graduate.

3. Have a GPA of 2.5 in undergraduate and graduate work.

4. Submit acceptable scores on the Graduate Record Examination or acceptable scores on the Miller Analogies Test.

Candidates may be conditionally admitted to the program without acceptable GRE or MAT scores, however, candidates may take only 6 hours (2 courses) before they are required to submit acceptable scores.
