Reading Doctoral Program
The Reading Doctoral Degree is a 60-hour program available on the SHSU campus or at The University Center in The Woodlands, Texas.

Technology Requirements
It is expected that candidates have the following computer skills: sending/receiving emails, attaching documents to emails, crating tables, creating PowerPoint presentations, conducting an online search, and using library electronic reserves. Microsoft Word is the required word processing program. It is also expected that candidates have access to a computer at home since most of the course w s done n the evening and on weekends.
Program of Study
Listed below are the courses in the recommended sequence in the doctoral program.
RDG 688 The Politics of Literacy: Prerequisites: RDG 588, RDG 589, and BSL 571 or consent of the instructor.
RDG 710 Seminar: (1 hour course taken for 3 consecutive semesters): Prerequisites: Admission into the Ed.D. Program in Reading.
RDG 730 Psychological Foundations of Language and Literacy: Admission into the Ed.D. Program in Reading.
RDG 732 Issues and Trends In Literacy Education: Prerequisite: Admission into the Ed.D. Program in Reading.
RDG 734 Literacy for Diverse Populations: Prerequisites: RDG 730 and 732.
RDG 737 Quantitative Research Methods in Literacy: Prerequisites: RDG 730.
RDG 760 Analysis, Interpretation, and Dissemination of Literacy Assessment: Prerequisites: RDG 730.
RDG 775 Leadership in Literacy: Prerequisites: RDG 760.
RDG 780 Internship in Reading: Prerequisites: RDG 760.
RDG 790 Qualitative Research Methods in Literacy: Prerequisites: RDG 730.
RDG 833 Dissertation: (must be retaken for a minimum of 9 semester-hours): Prerequisites: Admission to candidacy in the Doctoral Program in Reading, and successful completion of comprehensive exam and approval of doctoral advisor.
STA 765 Statistical Methods for Decision Making: Prerequisites: Admission into the Ed.D. Program in Reading.
STA 766 Multivariate Methods: Prerequisites: Admission into the Ed.D. Program in Reading.
EDL 731 Leadership Theory and Applications: Prerequisites: Admission to Ed.D. Program in Educational Leadership or the Ed.D. Program in Reading.
EDL 770 Education Policy and Ethics: Prerequisites: Admission to Ed.D. Program in Educational Leadership or the Ed.D. Program in Reading.
EDL 761 Accountability and Measurement for Contemporary Education: Admission to Ed.D. Program in Educational Leadership or the Ed.D. Program in Reading.

To be considered for REGULAR ADMISSION to the Reading Doctoral Program, applicants must submit the following documents:
To the Office of Graduate Studies:
1. Application for Admission
2. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended (must have a master's degree in reading or equivalent coursework, including 18 hours of graduate reading coursework from an accredited institution)
3. Acceptable scores on the GRE (1000) or Miller Analogy Test that fits within the range of other doctoral programs within the state.
4. GPA of 3.0 on all graduate work
To the Department of Language, Literacy, and Special Populations:
1. Personal Statement – satisfactory response to questions on program application
2. Three letters of recommendation with accompanying checklists
3. Interview – satisfactory interview with the advisory committee
4. Teaching Certificate with a reading specialist endorsement and/or three years teaching experience.
To be considered for CONDITIONAL ADMISSION, candidates must submit:
1. Official Transcripts – master's degree in reading (18 hours of reading coursework must be completed before full admission status would be granted)
2. Students with a GPA lower than 3.0 accompanied by a statement of why that GPA does not adequately reflect his/her potential as a successful graduate student
3. Students with a GRE score lower than 1000 or a Miller Analogies Test (50%tile) may still be granted conditional admission when providing a statement of why that GRE score does not adequately reflect his/her potential as a successful graduate student
4. All other items necessary for full admission
Note: Students granted conditional admission: After the completion one semester (9 hours) of prescribed graduate course work and all required stem work at SHSU, the student would apply for full admission to the program and admission to candidacy. The advisory committee would review his/her academic progress, interpersonal skills, and motivation to determine whether or not the student should be allowed to continue in the doctoral program. All students would be accepted into the program as a cohort and would complete classes in a prescribed sequence. Exceptions to this would be courses taken as electives to fulfill the elective component. After the completion of one semester, a dissertation committee would be chosen.
