Reading is the essential skill that predicts students' future success. To that end, districts and schools need individuals trained individuals to promote excellence in reading, and to provide the leadership in curriculum and instruction that will lead to improved student achievement in reading and all other subjects. The Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling at Sam Houston State University offers a 30 hour Master's of Arts Degree in Instructional Leadership an emphasis in Reading. This is an Online program designed to provide academic and practical education for those wanting to work in reading leadership positions. Graduate students will learn theory and best practices for continuous improvement related to leadership, curriculum planning, professional development, research tools, program evaluation, and reading.
Students will be mentored by nationally and internationally recognized professors who are current in the field of reading and instructional leadership, care about student success, build lasting relationships, and serve as career references. In addition, the Online model helps students and faculty to build a community of learners that often last well beyond completion of the degree program.
