The Texas Oral Proficiency Test (TOPT)/Bilingual Proficiency Test (BLPT) for the bilingual educator candidate is required for certification (i.e. Bilingual EC-4 and Spanish). Currently, the TOPT version is available for test candidates to demonstrate proficiency in communication in a language other than English. The BLPT exam is in development and coding phases to be released for TOPT phase-out in the near future. Additional information about the TOPT can be found on the website: www.topt.ets.org/topt/.

Educators who will be taking the BTLPT are encouraged to practice using the Alternate Character Toolbar by accessing the tutorial.

Bilingual Program candidates (EC-4 and EC-6) who have completed the second BSL block may want to consider taking the practice TOPT soon. The last opportunity to take the TOPT will be July 10, 2010. Please schedule an appointment at texes@shsu.edu or 936-294-1045.
EC-6 Bilingual Program candidates will take the Bilingual Target Language Proficiency Test (BTLPT). This exam evaluates reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills, and requires the use of a special tool bar (http://www.texes.ets.org/texes/acttutorial/). The next testing window for the BTLPT (Spanish) will be October 19 – October 22 and October 26 – October 30; and, is offered only at designated test centers. Spanish 8-12 Program candidates should be advised to determine readiness for the TOPT. Information is forthcoming for the replacement exam for 8-12 certification candidates.
