Vision
To develop outstanding Economics, International
Business, and Business Analysis programs with
faculty that is recognized for excellence in
instruction, research, and service.
Mission
To provide curricula that promote critical
thinking skills and enhance decision making abilities,
which help students become productive and informed
citizens. Our faculty will engage in research
to create and disseminate new knowledge, develop
quality-teaching skills, maintain high professional
standards, and actively serve the University
and Community.
Culture
The vision and mission of the department will
be accomplished through an integrative culture
based on personal and professional integrity.
We are committed as a department to work as a
team to achieve long-term relationships with
our fellow faculty, students, alumni, and other
stakeholders. The efforts of the department are
directed toward academic programs, teaching,
research, and service to satisfy the needs of
our constituents. As a department, we are continually
evaluating, developing, and adapting to the ever
changing needs of the business world.

Objectives
The department will accomplish its vision and
mission through the organizational culture and
values by achieving the following objectives:
- "Outstanding Economics, International
Business, and Business Analysis programs" is
achieved when:
- The International Association of Collegiate
Schools of Business (AACSB) accreditation
is maintained.
- The department has at least one (1) endowed
chair and at least two (2) endowed professorships.
- Department programs are ranked in the
top 25 percent of schools evaluated in
the EBI survey.
- The University enrollment has the composition
of majors that include one percent declared
as Economics or International Business.
- The College of Business Administration
(COBA) norm for job placement and acceptance
into graduate programs is matched or exceeded
by Economics and International Business
majors.
- The proportion of faculty in the department
receiving merit is equal to or exceeds
the proportional share of merit in other
departments within COBA.
- The department establishes and maintains
strategic partnerships that provide five
(5) internship opportunities for students.
- A minor and major in Business Analysis
is approved.
- A vibrant chapter of Omicron Delta Epsilon,
the honorary fraternity for economics,
is reinstated.
- Student research is submitted each year
for competitive awards.
- A departmentally maintained tutorial
service is available for students enrolled
in introductory classes in economics and
business analysis.
- New career opportunities for Economics
and International Business majors are created
by recruiting five companies each year
to the College of Business Career Fair
that result in job placement.
- The Sam Houston State University (SHSU)
Puebla Field School program is maintained
and new Study Abroad program opportunities
for SHSU students are enhanced.
- "Excellence in teaching" is
achieved when:
- At least 80 percent of the faculty teaching:
- An introductory course in Economics
or Business Analysis scores at least
5.2 on Question 20 on Faculty Evaluation
System (FES) Form 2.
- An upper division course in Economics
or Business Analysis scores at least
5.4 on Question 20 on FES Form 2.
- Each faculty member teaching a graduate
course in Economics or Business Analysis
scores at least 6.0 on Question 20 on FES
Form 2.
- At least 60 percent of the departmental
faculty scores at least 5.9 on the following:
- Question 4 on FES Form 2 "The
professor makes the course material
understandable."
- Question 12 on FES Form 2, "The
professor makes the material of this
course relevant or meaningful to me."
- Question 13 of FES Form 2, "The
professor seems concerned with how
well students learn the material."
- At least 60 percent of the departmental
faculty scores at least 6.0 on the following:
- Question 17 of FES Form 2, "The
professor is available to help outside
of class."
- Question 18 on FES Form 2, "The
course is organized so that the subject
matter seems to fit together."
- At least 85 percent of the students majoring
in economics or international business
indicate in the Alumni Survey that SHSU
adequately met or exceeded their career
preparation needs in each of the following
areas:
- Analytical skill areas: problem formulation,
sources of business data,
statistical analysis, and interpretation
of statistical results.
- Computer literacy.
- Communication skills.
- The Sam Houston State University rankings
on the EBI survey match at
least the national rank for Economics,
Statistics, and International
Business.
- At least 75 percent of the students
responding to the questions related to
their Economics and Statistical training
in the Capstone Course Survey
indicate a positive response to their training.
- At least one member of the faculty within
the last five years has been
recognized with an innovative teaching
award.
- At least one member of the faculty within
the last ten years has received
the Excellence in Teaching Award.
- At least one member of the faculty within
the last five years has a refereed
publication in a pedagogical journal.
- "Excellence in research" is achieved
when:
- At least one faculty member each year
is published in a "top tier" journal.
- Each faculty member makes at least one
invited or professional
presentation every year.
- Each faculty member submits at least
one article or case study for
publication in a professional journal every
year.
- The department maintains a website featuring
a Working Paper series in
Economics, International Business, and
Statistics.
- The department sponsors a seminar series
where at least one invited
speaker and at least one member of the
faculty make presentations during
each fall and spring semester.
- "Excellence in service" is achieved
when:
- Each member of the departmental faculty
is a member of a College
committee.
- At least 50 percent of the departmental
faculty is a member of a University
committee.
- At least 20 percent of the faculty are
listed on the SHSU Homepage as
"Experts" that provide service to the community though consulting
and
presentations.
- At least 50 percent of departmental
faculty is available to provide
expertise to the College and University
administration on issues related to
economics and statistics.
- Each faculty member will hold membership
in a professional organization
related to his/her teaching field.
- At least 20 percent of the faculty will
hold a position as officer or other
leadership position in a professional organization
related to their
teaching/research field.
Implementation
The implementation of the Vision of the Department
of Economics and International
Business is accomplished primarily through the
Faculty Development Plan. On an
annual basis the Chairman of the Department distributes
the Faculty Development Plan
form to the faculty. After developing their Plan
each faculty member meets with the
Chairman to review the Plan. Modifications, if
necessary, are suggested, and a mutually
agreed upon Plan is approved.
