Tutoring hours are Monday through Friday 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Japan Study Abroad ProgramThe Conference on Regional Trade Agreements, Migration, and Remittances at the College of Business Administration on April 12-13, 2008The Department of Economics and International Business, in collaboration with the Gibson D Lewis Center for Business Research and Economic Development (CBED) at the College of Business Administration, Sam Houston State University, is organizing the Conference on Regional Trade Agreements, Migration, and Remittances with Special Focus on CAFTA and Latin America to be held on April 12-13, 2008. The conference highlights include the keynote speech by Dr. Mauricio Cárdenas, currently the Executive Director of Fedesarrollo, an independent policy-oriented research center in Bogotá, Colombia, who was the Minister of Economic Development and the Minister of Transportation in Colombia in the 1990s, and was named one the Leaders of the New Millennium by CNN/Time Magazine in 1999; invited lectures by Dr. Pia Orrenius of Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, Dr. Susan Pozo of Western Michigan University, and Dr. Kamal Saggi of Southern Methodist University, who have extensive research and policy experience; and a panel discussion by the Consul Generals of Mexico, Costa Rica, and Colombia. In addition, researchers from around the U.S. and from several foreign countries will present their papers at the conference. Professor Freeman is in the newsProfessor Don Freeman's research findings on effecctiveness of blood alcohol content (BAC) standard in reducing drunk driving fatalities have drawn media attention. He published his article "Drunk Driving Legislation and Traffic Fatalities" in the July issue of Contemporary Economic Policy. Change of Guard: Professor Freeman takes over as the Department Chair in Fall 2007Professor Bill Green is handing over the chair's position at the Department of Economics and International Business to Professor Don Freeman in Fall 2007 after serving as the chair for 22 years. Professor Green has made significant contributions to the growth of the department over the period of his tenure as the department chair. He will continue to teach his classes. Professor Freeman, who joined the department in 1998, will face the challenge of managing a large, and growing department with 20 faculty members in an environment in which the University is taking steps in new directions. Economics and International Business major appointed to the Board of RegentsEconomics and International Business major Magdalena Manzano has been appointed by Gov. Rick Perry to the Texas State University System's Board of Regents. She has earned the distinction of being the second student ever to be appointed to the Board of Regents. She will serve a one-year term, until Feb. 1, 2008. For more, read the news item at Today@Sam Dr. John Miller at U.S. Army War College (posted on 09-07-06)Dr. John Miller, assistant professor of business analysis, presented his research on the ongoing insurgency in Iraq at the "Proteus Futures Academic Workshop" held August 22-24 at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He was a part of a team of researchers affiliated with the Institute for the Study of Violent Groups (ISVG). For details, read the news item at Today@Sam Dr. Mark Frank is awarded Texas Excellence Fund reserach grant (posted on 06-02-05)Dr. Mark W. Frank, assistant professor of economics, has been awarded 2005 Texas Excellence Fund research grant for his research proposal 'Media Substitution in Liquor Advertising'. The Texas Excellence Fund is administered by the Office of the Comptroller of the State of Texas in order to promote increased research capacity and develop institutional excellence. He is the only recipient of this grant at the College of Business Administration. Dr. Frank's proposed research will be an empirical analysis on the substitutability of the alternative advertising media used by liquor firms. This analysis is deemed to have important policy implications for ban on liquor advertising. Dr. Ed Blackburne on Racial Profiling".....economist Edward Blackburne of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, said the new HPD figures look generally valid and go into more detail than those in the statewide study.... Blackburne called a high rate of consensual searches a "red flag," since it may indicate that police are making stops without probable cause to think an offense was committed." |

Excellence in Teaching AwardDr. Valerie "Pepper" Muehsam has won the 2003 Excellence in Teaching Award. She has been a finalist for this award three times in the past four years. She earned bachelor's (1988) and master's (1991) degrees from SHSU and her doctorate from Texas A&M University in 1998. Among her colleagues in the College of Business Administration Muehsam is known for high averages on teacher evaluation forms, and by the students for her enthusiasm and extra effort. The Department of Economics and International Business takes pride in Pepper’s achievement. |
