The Conference on Regional Trade Agreements, Migration, and Remittances at the College of Business Administration on April 12-13, 2008

The Department of Economics and International Business, in collaboration with the Gibson D Lewis Center for Business Research and Economic Development (CBED) at the College of Business Administration, Sam Houston State University, is organizing the Conference on Regional Trade Agreements, Migration, and Remittances with Special Focus on CAFTA and Latin America to be held on April 12-13, 2008. The conference highlights include the keynote speech by Dr. Mauricio Cárdenas, currently the Executive Director of Fedesarrollo, an independent policy-oriented research center in Bogotá, Colombia, who was the Minister of Economic Development and the Minister of Transportation in Colombia in the 1990s, and was named one the Leaders of the New Millennium by CNN/Time Magazine in 1999; invited lectures by Dr. Pia Orrenius of Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, Dr. Susan Pozo of Western Michigan University, and Dr. Kamal Saggi of Southern Methodist University, who have extensive research and policy experience; and a panel discussion by the Consul Generals of Mexico, Costa Rica, and Colombia. In addition, researchers from around the U.S. and from several foreign countries will present their papers at the conference. Professor Freeman is in the news

Professor Don Freeman's research findings on effecctiveness of blood alcohol content (BAC) standard in reducing drunk driving fatalities have drawn media attention. He published his article "Drunk Driving Legislation and Traffic Fatalities" in the July issue of Contemporary Economic Policy. This work has been discussed in local news media and recently he has appeared in Channel 3 television news. Fore more read the news story at Today@SAM. Change of Guard: Professor Freeman takes over as the Department Chair in Fall 2007

Professor Bill Green is handing over the chair's position at the Department of Economics and International Business to Professor Don Freeman in Fall 2007 after serving as the chair for 22 years. Professor Green has made significant contributions to the growth of the department over the period of his tenure as the department chair. He will continue to teach his classes. Professor Freeman, who joined the department in 1998, will face the challenge of managing a large, and growing department with 20 faculty members in an environment in which the University is taking steps in new directions. Thank you, Professor Green, for your excellent service! Congratulations and good luck, Professor Freeman!


Dr. Hiranya Nath granted tenure, promoted to Associate Professor

Dr. Hiranya Nath, who joined the Department of Economics and International Business in 2002, has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure effective Fall, 2007. Dr. Nath received his Ph.D. in Economics from Southern Methodist University in 2002, and has Master's degrees from the University of Delhi and Jawaharlal Nehru University , both in Delhi , India , and from Southern Methodist. Dr. Nath has nine papers published or accepted in refereed journals, and two book chapters since joining Sam Houston, and has made many presentations at economic conferences, often upon invitation. His research interests include macro- and monetary economics, development economics, and information economics. Dr. Nath is the course coordinator for ECO 463, monetary economics, and is the faculty sponsor for Omicron Delta Epsilon (ODE), the economics honor society. In his spare time, he serves as the department webmaster and as the coordinator of the department's seminar and working paper series. Congratulations Dr. Nath!

 


Two new faculty to join Economics & International Business in Fall, 2007

Dr. Darren Grant and Dr. Carlos Vargas-Silva will be joining the Department of Economics and International Business in the Fall semester. Dr. Grant comes to us from UT-Arlington, where he is currently senior lecturer and past coordinator of the Health Care Administration Master's program. Dr. Grant received his Ph.D. from Florida State , and has research interests in Health Policy and Human Capital, and has several publications in these areas. Dr. Vargas-Silva comes to us from a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Vermont . Dr. Vargas-Silva received his Ph.D. from Western Michigan University , and has published papers in international migration, economic development, and international macroeconomics. Welcome Darren and Carlos!

 


Economics and International Business major appointed to the Board of Regents

Economics and International Business major Magdalena Manzano has been appointed by Gov. Rick Perry to the Texas State University System's Board of Regents. She has earned the distinction of being the second student ever to be appointed to the Board of Regents. She will serve a one-year term, until Feb. 1, 2008. Tenure track Job Openings for Fall 2007

The Department of Economics and International Business is seeking candidates for two new positions beginning in the Fall, 2007-to teach courses in business analysis (statistics) and economics at the undergraduate and MBA level. The positions are for Assistant Professor (tenure track). Candidates should have a Ph.D. (or be ABD with an anticipated completion date no later than Summer, 2007), be strongly committed to quality teaching, and exhibit a strong potential for successful research and publications. The economics and international business programs are located within the College of Business Administration, which is AACSB accredited. Dr. John Miller at U.S. Army War College (posted on 09-07-06)

Dr. John Miller, assistant professor of business analysis, presented his research on the ongoing insurgency in Iraq at the "Proteus Futures Academic Workshop" held August 22-24 at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He was a part of a team of researchers affiliated with the Institute for the Study of Violent Groups (ISVG). For details, read the news item at Today@Sam

Professor Don Bumpass, Paul Levine and Anela Leon-Guerrero defeated Ken Jennings of Jeopardy fame in a trivia contest at SHSU on Tuesday (November 15).


Dr. Mark Frank is awarded Texas Excellence Fund reserach grant (posted on 06-02-05)

Dr. Mark W. Frank, assistant professor of economics, has been awarded 2005 Texas Excellence Fund research grant for his research proposal 'Media Substitution in Liquor Advertising'. The Texas Excellence Fund is administered by the Office of the Comptroller of the State of Texas in order to promote increased research capacity and develop institutional excellence. He is the only recipient of this grant at the College of Business Administration. Dr. Frank's proposed research will be an empirical analysis on the substitutability of the alternative advertising media used by liquor firms. This analysis is deemed to have important policy implications for ban on liquor advertising.


Ashley Nemer in the news (posted 04-26-05)

Ashley Nemer, an undergraduate Econ major, received a grant from Omicron Delta Epsilon Honor Society to conduct a research on effects of alcohol consumption and socializing on SHSU students' academic performance. She has written a research paper using data collected through a survey on SHSU campus. She presented her paper to the faculty of Economics and International Business on April 21. Huntsville Item has published an article on the basis of her research findings.

Dr. Ed Blackburne on Racial Profiling

".....economist Edward Blackburne of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, said the new HPD figures look generally valid and go into more detail than those in the statewide study.... Blackburne called a high rate of consensual searches a "red flag," since it may indicate that police are making stops without probable cause to think an offense was committed."

Faculty Senate

Mark W. Frank and Valerie P. Muehsam have been elected new COBA senators to the SHSU Faculty Senate. Dr. Muehsam is also the outgoing president of the faculty senate. Dr. Frank will be serving at the Faculty Senate for the first time.


Dr. Berg Nominated

Dr. Doug BergDr. Doug Berg has been nominated the Webmaster for the Academy of Economics and Finance.


Excellence in Teaching Award

Dr. Valerie MuehsamDr. Valerie "Pepper" Muehsam has won the 2003 Excellence in Teaching Award. She has been a finalist for this award three times in the past four years. She earned bachelor's (1988) and master's (1991) degrees from SHSU and her doctorate from Texas A&M University in 1998. Among her colleagues in the College of Business Administration Muehsam is known for high averages on teacher evaluation forms, and by the students for her enthusiasm and extra effort. The Department of Economics and International Business takes pride in Pepper’s achievement.
