PERSONAL

Maureen Virginia McIntyre is a native Texan whose roots run deep in the rich Texas soil. Born in Wharton, Texas, to Cap. Roy McIntyre and Marjorie Sledge McIntyre, Maureen and her family moved to San Benito in the Rio Grande Valley when Maureen was five. Her grandfather, E. H. Sledge planted much of the original cotton and citrus in the valley at Southmost Plantation.

Maureen had a wonderful childhood in scouting, Rainbow Girls, choirs, and she excelled scholastically. She was writing and performing in school plays and had chosen a life in the theatre by the eighth grade when her family moved to Houston. There she attended Mirabeau B. Lamar High School where she was an active thespian, won state acting honors, scholastic honors and graduated as Salutatorian.

Maureen became a theatre major at the University of Texas in 1962, receiving a B.F.A. in Drama Education in 1967 and taught drama at Robert E. Lee High School in Houston. Her program flourished and won awards, but she returned to the University of Texas in 1968 to pursue graduate studies. Every summer from 1965-69 she was Director of the Victoria, Texas Summer Theatre. Maureen received an M.F.A. in Theatre Production in 1970. She began teaching costuming and creative dramatics at Sam Houston State University. Two years later, at her request, she was reassigned to teach her first loves, acting and directing. She has created new classes in Advanced Theatre Speech, Stage Dialects, Acting for the Camera and Period Acting Styles. Her passion for teaching and directing has never diminished. She has been honored by her peers on the state and local level. (See Awards and Honors.) However, she was most honored to be named Texas Educational Theatre Association Theatre Educator of the Year/Colleges and Universities, 1993.

Maureen is married to Burton L. Aber and says she has "the best husband, the best job and the best theatre students in Texas!"
