Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival
SHSU's Grand Canyon honored at American College Theatre Regional Festival
The SHSU Department of Theatre & Dance recently traveled to the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival's (KCACTF) regional festival in Tulsa , Oklahoma , and returned with high honors.
Grand Canyon received the Directors' Choice Award for best play at the Region VI level, and was nominated for consideration to perform at the national festival in Washington , D.C. Scott McCarrey, the playwright, also received an award for “Excellence in Playwriting,” and Sam Houston State University received an award for, “Excellence in Supporting Original Work”. Grand Canyon has been selected as an alternate to the national festival, which will take place in Washington D.C. in April 2007.
In addition, several members of the cast and crew received full fellowships to the KCACTF National Festival. Playwright Scott McCarrey will attend the festival to participate in master classes with acclaimed playwrights Edward Albee, Noah Haidle, Naomi Iizuka, and Lee Blessing, and the chair of the playwriting program at the Yale school of drama, Mark Bly. Cast members Steven Chambers, Garrett Graham, and Cody Hinson, who are all theatre majors at SHSU, were also invited to attend the festival, participating in acting master classes and auditions. The cast will perform a selection from Grand Canyon during the Michael Kanin Playwriting Award Showcase.
Patrick Pearson, SHSU Musical Theatre graduate and third year graduate student at California State University - Fullerton , directed a production of The Diviners by Jim Leonard. This productions was one of four productions invited to the KCACTF National Festival.
Started in 1969 by Roger L. Stevens, the Kennedy Center 's founding chairman, the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival is a national theater program involving 18,000 students from colleges and universities nationwide, which has served as a catalyst in improving the quality of college theatre in the United States . The KCACTF has grown into a network of more than 600 academic institutions throughout the country, where theatre departments and student artists showcase their work and receive outside assessment by KCACTF respondents.
The Theatre program at SHSU is thrilled to be recognized and to have received such prestigious awards from KCACTF.
