Admission
Undergraduate
Admission to MFA is by audition only. One audition is held each semester. Teaching certification is available with BFA in Dance through the College of Education. Certification for BFA requires a designated 18-24 hour minor in preparation for a second teaching field.
Graduate
Students seeking admission to the Master of Fine Arts program offered by the Dance Program must:
- audition
- submit the Graduate Studies Application for Admission to the Office of Graduate Studies
- submit official transcripts of all college-level work (including the transcript that shows the date the undergraduate degree was conferred)
- submit essay
Audition Information
BFA Auditions
The dates for audition are:
Friday, December 2, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Saturday, February 11, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Friday, April 20, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Location: SHSU Campus, Performing arts center building, Huntsville, Texas.
Students who wish to be accepted into the dance program must also apply for admittance through the admissions office. Those who are wishing to become a dance major at Sam Houston State University must also be accepted through the university.
Students are required to audition for admission /scholarship into the Dance Program.
The audition format is a ballet class followed by an abbreviated modern dance class, and concludes with either a movement improvisation exercise or jazz combination. Please allow three to four hours for the full audition. Dancers should wear solid colored leotard, tights and ballet slippers. No prints on body wear and no baggy outer wear (i.e. no sweat pants or tops) should be worn for the audition. The modern dance phrase will be danced barefoot.

MFA applicants are expected to show a brief chorographic solo and the audition process concludes with an interview with dance faculty. Please allow four to five hours for the full audition. The modern dance phrase will be danced barefoot.
