SHSU Online Participates in This Year's Ruck March
On September 22, Sam Houston State University faculty, staff, and friends met at Huntsville State Park to participate in the third annual Military Ruck March, an event to support our military service members.
Four members of the SHSU Online team, Dr. Michael Perez, Tyler Watson, Nat Conner, and Jacob Spradlin, participated in the day’s festivities as marchers laced up their shoes, grabbed a weighted rucksack, and confronted the eight-mile course. Upon completion, the team felt pride and compassion for our service members.
Spradlin landed a second-place finish in his age group; a great accomplishment as he recently started running again. An ankle injury knocked him off his feet for almost a year, requiring surgery and time to heal, but he is ready for more running and competition.
The event began in 2010 as a way to honor and remember those who have served and are currently serving our military. The march also brought attention to the daily physical, mental, and emotional “load” service members carry.
“Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, thousands of Americans have borne the burden of fighting and dying in war, as well as those civil service men and women on the lines here at home keeping us safe,” said Jacob Bullion, recruiting coordinator for SHSU’s Veterans Success at Sam office. “This is a march to commemorate both the efforts of those still serving, those who have served, and those that never came home.”
All proceeds from the event benefit the Warrior and Family Support Center at the Brooke Army Medical Center, the Walker County Sheriff's Department, and the Huntsville Volunteer Fire Department.
