CHEMISTRY

CHM 135 [CHEM 1306] INORGANIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY LECTURE

10 lessons, 1 final exam
Credit 3
The elements and their compounds are considered from a non-technical standpoint with emphasis placed on more familiar materials. This course is for non-science majors. In order to use this course to satisfy four hours of laboratory science requirement, the companion one-hour laboratory course, CHM 115, must eventually be taken on campus using university laboratory facilities. The laboratory course may be taken anytime the student so chooses, either concurrently or at some later time prior to graduation.

CHM 136 [CHEM 1307] INTRODUCTORY ORGANIC AND BIOCHEMISTRY LECTURE

10 lessons, 1 final exam
Credit 3
Prerequisite: CHM 135 or 138 or completion of a high school chemistry course
An orientation in organic chemistry is given in the first part of the course to allow treatment of the chemistry of nutrition and other biochemical aspects given in the last part. This course is for non-science majors. In order to use this course to satisfy four hours of laboratory science requirement, the companion one-hour laboratory course, CHM 116, must eventually be taken on campus using university laboratory facilities. The laboratory course may be taken anytime the student so chooses, either concurrently or at some later time prior to graduation.

CHM 138 [CHEM 1311] GENERAL CHEMISTRY I: LECTURE

15 lessons, 1 final exam
Credit 3, $270
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in MTH 163, MTH 170, MTH 199 or MTH 284 (or equivalent), or a minimum Math score of 250 on the THEA (or equivalent).
The following topics are studied: chemical changes and laws governing them; the gas laws; reactions involving oxygen, hydrogen, acids, bases, and salts; ionization; metathesis; the periodic classification; and the atomic structure. In order to use this course to satisfy four hours of the laboratory requirement, the companion one-hour laboratory course, CHM 118, must eventually be taken using university facilities. The laboratory course may be taken anytime the student so chooses, either concurrently or at some later time prior to graduation.

CHM 139 [CHEM 1312] GENERAL CHEMISTRY II: LECTURE

13 lessons, 1 final exam
Credit 3, $270
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in Chemistry 138.
Descriptive chemistry, equilibria, kinetics, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and oxidation-reduction reactions are presented. In order to use this course to satisfy four hours of the laboratory science requirement, the companion one-hour laboratory course, CHM 119, must eventually be taken using university laboratory facilities. The laboratory course may be taken anytime the student chooses, either concurrently or at some other time prior to graduation.
