Swing Kids

At the present time, the group meets in AB3 (dance/ROTC) at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The room is on the far right if you enter by the front doors (110, I believe). We're talking about maybe meeting on Monday as well and occasionally having a class for beginning dancers or those interested in learning something new.

This university offers ballroom, country/western, and swing classes through the dance department and continuing education. Swing Kids was formed so these students would have a nice place to continue practicing, learning, and sharing. All students interested in social dancing are welcome. No experience necessary! Workshops may be requested for beginner and intermediate level dancers. In the meantime, friendly dancers will be happy to show the less experienced a few things. The direction of the club is driven by the interests of the members. I've seen people who joined to swing dance get excited about a tango workshop, so don't hesitate to suggest something different. Come by and give us a try!

Description

Swing Kids is a group of students interested in partnership dancing. The word "swing" in our name was chosen because it sounds cool, but we do try to ensure that everyone has a chance to learn some cool swing/jitterbug moves and try them out. However, the original group came from students in a ballroom dance class, and some of the current group are interested in other dances, so we also like to play around with just about any social dance known, like tango, waltz, two-step, etc. Workshops in any of these dances can be provided depending on member interest.

Swing Kids is a student organization at SHSU devoted to sharing the joys of dancing and providing an environment for students to enhance their knowledge and abilities through sharing of knowledge and pooling resources to bring in professional teachers for workshops. While some members have expressed an interest in competing or forming performance teams, the main goal of the organization is to promote social dancing (otherwise known as FUN).

So, if you're interested in working on your swing, Latin, country western, or ballroom moves, or just want to try dancing in a supportive, fun environment, then please join us for a meeting, workshop, or special outing. Occasionally, we will announce workshops scheduled for the convenience of an experienced instructor. There are always people willing to show the beginners a step or two, so don't hesitate to join us; however, for a thorough introduction, we encourage you to take advantage of the social dance classes offered by the Dance department or take lessons from one of the professional instructors in the area.

The $10 big bands play a variety of music, including swing (jitterbug), foxtrot, tango, and latin dances. Tends to attract older dancers, but it's one of the few places outside of a dance studio where no age restrictions apply. However, gentlemen must wear a jacket while on the dance floor.
