Information Highway
Seminar for Chinese Association of Professionals in Science and Technology
Dear everyone,
We are a group of Chinese students of computer science at Sam Houston State University. Dr. Ji Jiahuang has asked us to organize a seminar on Information Highway. The work is underway now.
The seminar will be divided into two sessions, each taking up 3 hours. We preliminarily plan
the first session on July 7 at the Chinese Consulate in Houston. The second session is on Aug. 18, 1996 at the Chinese Consulate in Houston.
The following is our initial thoughts about the outline and content of the seminar. We would
like to hear your ideas, suggestions and comments about it to make the seminar more fruitful.
In the mean time, we are also willing to address any questions you may have about the
Information Highway and other related topics.
Given the complexity and the broad coverage of the subject, we suggest that the two sessions be
devoted to two different aspects, looking at the subject from different angles.
For the first session, our purpose is to give some general idea of what the Internet is and some
of its general uses to arouse the interest of the audience so as to giver the second session a better
chance of success.
The first session will be sub-divided into three parts. The first part will be general introduction.
The second part will be concentrated on information search. The speakers will adopt a
country-specific approach. One talk can be given on China-related information search and
another on US-related information search. In these talks, speakers will elaborate on the different
methods of information search, such as searching by keyword or by subject or by
catalogue.
The third part will concentrate on multimedia, which will cover topics such as Internet Phone,
Internet Radio and Internet Video.
The second session will be about more technical stuff. It will also be subdivided into three parts.
The first part is about how to connect to the Internet.
The second part is on the writing of home pages and the use home page software such as HTML,
JAVA and CGI.
The third part is about the legal aspects of the internet or internet law.
We will do out best to keep the talks of the sessions short so that there is more time for
demonstration and discussion and interaction with the audience. We are also willing to do
research on some questions you may have and share related information with you.
We shall be looking forward to seeing you.
