Correspondence Course Division
The registration fee is assessed at the rate of $70.00 per semester credit hour (SCH); the non-refundable Administrative Fee for each course is $30.00. Therefore, a 3 SCH course is $240.00; a 1 SCH course is $100.00. All fees are payable in advance by cash, personal check, money order, VISA, or MasterCard. Students owing a past due balance to the University will not be permitted to register for Correspondence Courses until their balance is paid. In the event a check is returned unpaid, there will be a $25.00 charge by the SHSU Business Office. Post-dated checks will not be accepted. No assignments can be accepted unless a student's financial accounts are in order.
The largest source of funds (scholarships, grants, loans, and employment) is from federal entities. To receive Title IV Federal assistance to attend college, a student must be enrolled as a regular student and making academic progress toward a degree or certification offered by the school. Students enrolled solely in correspondence courses are NOT eligible for Title IV Federal assistance. For more information, contact the Student Financial Aid Office at 936.294.1774 or access their website at www.shsu.edu/fao.

The Hazlewood Act provides assistance for Texas veterans and dependents of Texas veterans who died while performing military service and who have exhausted their federal Veterans Administration benefits. To be eligible, the students must be enrolled in a course that meets the requirements of a component area in the SHSU Core Curriculum or that is applicable toward the student's Official Degree Plan that has been designated within the student's major department. For further information regarding the Hazlewood Act, contact the Veterans Assistance staff in the Registrar's Office, telephone number (936) 294-1046.
A transfer is permitted when a satisfactory reason is offered and approved. A transfer will normally not be approved after two or more lessons have been submitted for grading. Only one transfer per student will be considered. The transfer fee is $20.00, (includes a new packet and new bar codes) plus $10.00 per lesson submitted for grading. In the event a transfer is granted, the student's original enrollment date will remain in effect.
A student may request a one-time extension (6 months). Your course will be extended from the original enrollment date. The extension fee is $25.00.
A one-time special postage and handling fee of $25.00 will be charged to any student taking a correspondence course from a mailing address outside the continental U.S. NOTE: The special postage and handling fee of $25.00 does not apply to students with APO or FPO addresses.
A fee for the replacement of all the lessons in a correspondence course is $10.00. The fee for the replacement of bar code labels is $2.50 per set.
You may drop a correspondence course anytime before the final examination without academic penalty, and the course will not appear on your official transcript. If you open the final examination envelope, however, you may no longer drop the course and a grade will be assigned. Grades become a permanent part of the student's SHSU record.
In the event a refund is granted, the following policy will apply:

Those who need course credit for graduation or certification at the end of a semester or summer school should complete their correspondence work at least three weeks prior to the end of that semester or summer school. Specific deadlines or dates may be obtained from the Correspondence Course Division office. Seniors should schedule exams as early as possible to ensure that instructors can grade them and submit grades before the three week deadline.
As previously indicated, a correspondence course may not be completed in less than sixty days from enrollment date. A correspondence course must be completed within 12 months unless an extension is approved by the Correspondence Course Division and the applicable fee is paid.
Keep in mind:
Many students are looking forward to completing their coursework for credit toward graduation. Our seniors are trying to graduate during the same times of the year, so it follows that we handle the greatest volume of business during these periods. The biggest "rush" occurs around each graduation - April through June, July through August, and October through December. Even with careful planning, students often end up with last-minute tasks such as class projects, lessons, or problems that require the attention of instructors and our staff. If possible, allow for a few delays during rush periods. Please understand that we are doing everything that we can to help you graduate on time.
The Lesson Packet for each correspondence course contains information which indicates how your final grade is determined. The percentage value of the final examination varies from course to course and is established at the time the course material is developed by the faculty.
The Final Examination Application should be sent to the Correspondence Course Division at least two weeks before you wish to take the exam. The final exam cannot be taken until all lessons for the course have been received and graded. All examinations must be taken at Sam Houston State University or at an accredited college or university approved by the Correspondence Course Division. Persons in the military may have an exam supervised by an education officer on their base or ship. Overseas students should contact the American embassy. When the examination is taken at Sam Houston State University, an examination fee will not be charged. Other institutions do not normally charge an examination fee; however, any such fee charged is the responsibility of the student. Do not forget to take an ID with photograph to the testing site. You will not be allowed to test without proof of identity.
If the final examination is taken at a test site other than Sam Houston State University, you should allow two weeks additional time to meet any deadline. Remember, we will not mail the exam or allow you to test in our facility until 100 percent of the lessons have been recieved in acceptable form, including projects or papers.
Exams are proctored in the Correspondence Course Division Office during regular business hours. The student may select from two testing lessons offered Monday through Thursday; only one testing session is offered on Friday. Each testing session allows three hours for the examination. Students who take the final examination at SHSU should not bring guests, children, or pets to the examination location. The Lowman Student Center on the SHSU campus has ample facilities for visitors.
