Texas Certification Tests Approved and Offered at SHSU
The State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) has approved and established a standards-based system to help align Texas education from kindergarten through college. The content knowledge required of an entry-level educator in a particular field in Texas public schools is measured by the Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) tests. A candidate must receive approval from the EPP to sit for the exam in their particular educational area. Sam Houston State University (SHSU) is approved to offer the following Texas certification tests:

All candidates are required to take the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) Standards test (EC-12). The purpose of the PPR EC-12 test is to ensure that newly certified Texas educators have the essential knowledge and skills to teach students in Texas public schools. There are 100 multiple-choice questions with four domains, aligned to the PPR Standards. The test is scored on a 100 to 300 scale, with a passing score of 240. The PPR Standards (EC-Grade 12) are located at the following link: http://www.sbec.state.tx.us/sbeconline/standtest/standards/allppr.pdf
At Sam Houston State University, the EC-6, Middle School, and Secondary Education courses are aligned to the PPR Standards. The alignment of the PPR Standards to the course work is an accountability measure for EPP at SHSU indicating the importance of the PPR Standards in preparing educators for Texas.
