Smith-Hutson Scholarship Program

The Smith-Hutson Scholarship Program is dedicated to providing educational opportunities to prospective business students who can demonstrate financial need and have academic potential. The Smith-Hutson Scholarship Program was established in 1996 by an anonymous donor. Modeled after the scholarship program supported through the Terry Foundation, the Smith-Hutson Scholarship program has grown to be the most generous and prolific scholarship program offered at Sam Houston State University.

Originally targeting students graduating from high schools in rural Texas, the program now welcomes applicants statewide. Since its establishment 280 students have received a Smith-Hutson Scholarship. Forming a cohort, the graduate rate of Smith-Hutson scholars far exceeds that of the university as a whole. The program offers its scholars more than just funding. The Smith-Hutson scholars have access to tutoring, mentoring from upper classmen, and the opportunity to develop a professional relationship with the College leadership.

Smith-Hutson Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee which includes the dean of the College of Business Administration (COBA) and a representative named by the Donor. The following criteria are applied. Applicants must:

  1. be a resident of the state of Texas,
  2. satisfy admission requirements of Sam Houston State University,
  3. be a declared business major,
  4. demonstrate financial need supported with copies of their guardian's Form 1040 tax returns for the preceding two tax years,
  5. guardian's W-2 forms for the most current tax year
  6. provide a personal essay describing career goals (maximum two pages),
  7. provide two letters of recommendation from non-family members addressing academic potential and/or financial need (it is preferable that at least one of these letters come from a teacher of English or Mathematics in whose class(es) the student was enrolled in the last year),
  8. be unmarried with no children, and
  9. be available for a personal interview in May preceding fall enrollment.

A second scholarship (Smith-Hutson Scholarship II) began in 2005 and provides an educational opportunity to Groveton High School students who wish to pursue a degree from Sam Houston State University. Students interested in the Smith-Hutson Scholarship II should contact the principal at Groveton High School.

A third scholarship (Smith-Hutson Scholarship III) began in 2007 and accepts a community college student who has completed the first two years of their undergraduate degree into the banking program. The scholarship provides funding up to $14,000 a year for two years in order for the transfer student to complete the undergraduate degree in Banking and Financial Institutions.
