Text: Organic Chemistry Laboratory Lab Manual
This is the second semester of a two-semester sequence in the manipulations involved in organic chemistry. Be sure to continue to take proper care of your equipment, keep your work area clean, and exercise proper care of the chemicals and the community equipment such as melting point apparatuses.
Professional Behavior: You are expected act in the following manner while in the laboratory
1) Observe all safety rules. That is, neither food nor drink is allowed in the laboratory.
2) Safety glasses are required at all times.
3) Your work area is to be kept clean at the end of your laboratory period.
4) Your samples must be submitted with a label that tells the product, per cent yield, raw yield, and mp or boiling point.
5) Honesty is worth more than a good report. Dishonesty and disregard for laboratory equipment will result in expulsion from the laboratory.
Failure to observe rules 1 and 2 will result in expulsion from the laboratory
Failure to observe rules 3 and 4 will result in a loss of 10 pts for each violation.
You will be graded on the percent yield of your products as well as the purity of your product. You must be careful in the organic lab. The goal of the lab is not to “get done as fast as I can” but rather to learn about organic chemistry.
Tentative Schedule.
Week of Experiment
01/31-02/04 Check In Clean Up
02/07-02/11 Nitration of Methyl Benzoate
02/14-02/18 Preparation of 1,4-Di-tert-butyl-2,5-dimethoxybenzene
021-02/25 Diels-Alder Reaction: cis-Norbornene-5,6-endo-dicarboxylic Anhydride
028-03/04 Preparation of Potassium Benzohydroxamate
03/07-03/11 The Benzoin Condensation
03/14-03/18 SPRING BREAK NO CLASS
03/21-03/25 The Beckmann Rearrangement
03/28-04/01 Preparation Tetraphenylporphyrin
04/05-04/09 Chemistry of Amines
04/12-04/14 Preparation of 3-Carboethoxycoumarin
04/18-04/222 Final Exam,
Again, students must adhere to the safety guidelines and little tolerance will be given since you are now in your fourth semester of chemistry labs. No food or drink in the lab, eye protection must be worn, and no shorts or sandals are to be worn in the labs. Sloppiness will not be tolerated and your work station must be cleaned when through with the lab period.
Grades are as follows:
10 labs @ 50 pts each = 500 pts Grade: attendance = 10; product = 30, write up = 10
drop one lab score -50 pts
One Final Exam 100 pts
550 pts total
495 – 550 = A,
440 - 494 = B,
385 - 439 = C
<385 = D
