Five-Year B.S./M.S. Program in Chemistry

What is the BS/MS Program?

The B.S./M.S. Program in Chemistry is an academic program that allows students to obtain both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Chemistry in 5 years. Participants are allowed to take graduate courses in chemistry during their senior year which can be used toward satisfying their Masters degree requirements.

If you are interested, your should inform the Department of Chemistry at the beginning of your junior year, as you will need to plan your junior year studies differently from other undergraduates. You efforts in undergraduate research, started in the summer of your junior year, will be continued in research in your senior year.

Sophomore Year

Formulate your career goals as clearly as you can and determine which academic program will best meet those goals. You may wish to consult the chemistry faculty to help with this formulation and your course/career planning. Interview the graduate faculty in the department of chemistry in order to find a research group/project to work on.

Junior Year

During the spring semester of your junior year, apply to the Chemistry Department for admission to the B.S./M.S. program by contacting the Chair of Chemistry. You will need to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) in the second semester of your junior year. A minimum of verbal + quantitative = 1000 is required for acceptance in the program. Contact the office of graduate research for locations and dates of the test.

Senior Year

During the spring and two summer semester of your senior year, you will take 9 hours of graduate chemistry courses as well as continue working in a research group. By taking these courses in your senior year, you can complete the M.S. requirements in the fifth year.

How do I apply?

To apply for the B.S./M.S. in Chemistry, a student must: 1.) Submit an application for the B.S./M.S. program to the Department of Chemistry in the junior year. Your application must be approved by the Chair of Chemistry and Graduate Advisor.

2.) You will need to submit three letters of recommendation. These letters should be addresses to the Graduate Advisor or Chair of the Department of Chemistry and can be mailed directly to the department or originals delivered by hand by the applicant.

3.) You must also submit a standard graduate application (which can be found in the Chemistry Department office or Office of Graduate Studies). Do not submit this application to Office of Graduate Studies. Return all sections of the application to the Chair of Chemistry.

4.) Include unofficial college transcripts along with your graduate application.

5.) Graduate courses taken in your senior year will count for graduate credit, provided they are not also used to satisfy the B.S. unit requirements. In order to complete the B.S./M.S. program in 5 years the B.S. must be the Plan II B.S. in Chemistry not the A.C.S. certified Plan I.
