If you hold a Baccalaureate degree and would like to be certified as a Texas teacher, Sam Houston State University offers an online option for taking 18 of the required 24 semester hours  needed for certification and allows you to receive graduate credit toward your Masters degree for all 24 hours.  Since a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction degree requires 36 graduate hours, you would be able to complete over half of the requirements for a Masters degree while completing certification and would be able to complete a majority of the requirements using convenient, online distance education resources from your own home or school.  Depending upon your individual plan, you may be able to take online graduate hours on your Masters in addition to the hours you would receive for certification.

If you choose the online Post Baccalaureate Alternate Route to Certification (PBARC), you could expect to complete teacher certification in about one year; however, each student’s Post  Baccalaureate plan can be individualized to meet your needs.  After you are admitted to the program, a faculty member will meet with you to advise you regarding the most convenient time to take the courses on your plan.

A student who wishes to complete the 24 hour Post Baccalaureate Alternate Route to Certification in 12 months might follow a plan something like the following:

Fall semester—9 hours (6 hours online)

SED 560—Methods of Instruction

SED 590—Classroom Management

SED 598—Internship

Spring Semester—6 hours (3 hours online)

                 SED 597—Human Growth and Development

                 SED 599—Internship

Summer I and II—9 hours (9 hours online)

                 SED 593--Assessment of Learning

                 SED 583—Integrating Current Technologies

                 RDG 589—Improvement of Literacy
