Course Description: Biology 245 is a course on human anatomy, designed for the Non-Biology major. Lecture deals almost exclusively with the anatomy (form and function) of the human body, with topics ranging from the cellular level to the organ systems level. Laboratories use human, sheep, and pig examples to demonstrate primarily gross anatomy of the systems under study. Laboratory and lecture will be integrated so that they support each other. The goal of this course is to provide a working knowledge of human anatomical concepts.
Prerequisite: None, but a course in general biology is recommended.
Text: Marieb, E. N. and J. Mallatt. 2001. Human Anatomy, Third Edition. Addison Wesley Longman.
Attendance and Performance: Students are expected to attend
classes and labs.
Written testing will be from material that is presented in lecture.
Most, but not all, of this material is found in the text book. Therefore,
the text should be used to prepare for and help in understanding of the
topics covered in Lecture, but the lecture information is crucial for complete
preparation for testing. Lecture information is also available on
my web site, but visiting the web site in place of coming to class lectures
will not prepare you to pass the exams. Each student is required
to complete dissections in the laboratory. In an anatomy class this
exercise is essential for gaining competence in dealing with the subject
matter and you cannot pass this class without completing the dissections.
Preparation and lab clean-up is also required of all students.
Make-Up Policy: Make-up lecture exams will be given only to those with excused absences. Any exams missed because of unexcused absences will result in a grade of zero for that exam. Excused absences include medical problems (with documentation from a doctor); death in the family; excused absences while conducting official Sam Houston State University business; or absences approved by the instructor before the time of the absence. To make-up any lecture exam you will be required to take a comprehensive final test. If you have missed a lecture test there will be no way to re-take that test. If you know that you will have to miss an exam, you may make arrangements to pre-take the test.
Academic Dishonesty: Regulations and responsibilities stated in the Student Code and Faculty Handbook will be followed in the event of academic dishonesty.
Students with Disabilities: Students who have disabilities that may prevent them from fully demonstrating their abilities should contact the instructor as soon as possible to discuss accommodations necessary to ensure the students educational opportunity.
Final Exam: The final exam will be given during the scheduled time. If you miss the final exam, contact the professor before the end of the next day or a final exam grade of zero will be given.
Lecture Exams: Lecture exams will be hour long and may be a combination of matching, fill-in-the-blank, short answer, and essay.
Laboratory Exams: Laboratory exams will be practicals, in which you must correctly identify anatomical features or structures. These exams will consist of you writing a correct name on an answer sheet. The answers will come from your memory and will not come from a work bank, be multiple choice or matching.
Dissection and Quizzes: You will be required to complete dissections and will be graded on dissections and their being correctly labeled. The dissection grade will be worth 10 points. Instructions will be given prior to each lab. There will be 5 scheduled lab quizzes worth 10 points each. You may drop your lowest lab quiz for calculation of your final grade. Quizzes will be at the beginning of the lab period. If you are not in class when the quiz is given, you will not be allowed to take it.
Grading: Grades will be based on total points earned by the student throughout the course. Grades will be determined on a percentage basis as follows:
A = above 90% above 585 points
B = 80-89% 520-684 points
C = 70-79% 455-519 points
D = 60-69% 390-454 points
F = below 60% below 390 points
Points will be distributed as follows:
4 lecture tests (100 points each)
400 points
2 laboratory tests (100 points each) 200 points
Dissections and lab quizzes
50 points
Total Points
650 points
The instructor reserves the right to create a curve (or not) for each test. That is, points may be added to all students equally if the instructor deems it necessary. Points will never be taken away due to a superb class performance.
There will be no individual extra credit.
