The Art Department offers dynamic and innovative programs for students interested in the visual arts. Degrees are offered in Studio Art, Photography, Graphic Design, and Computer Animation. The Department has over 30,000 square feet of space devoted to studios, laboratories, lecture halls and galleries. Studios in Painting, Sculpture, Ceramics, Printmaking and Photography maintain the best tools available for students to develop skills and express ideas. Digital labs maintain state of the art computer equipment for students in Graphics, Photography and Computer Animation.

18 full time and 5 part time faculty are professional artists who exhibit their work in galleries and museums throughout the US, and Art Historians who publish critical writings about contemporary art. About 450 students major in Art at SHSU.

Located 70 miles north of Houston, SHSU is adjacent to the Sam Houston National Forest and the piney woods of East Texas.

The Mission of the Art Department is to promote critical thinking, creative problem solving and aesthetic understanding in the student body and the SHSU faculty, and to create a communityof artists and art lovers that is local and global.
