The BFA review
Prior to the review, what should students do to prepare?
What is it?
When is it done?
Who does it?
What process is employed?
What do you do after the voting?
What is the Art core?
Who are the faculty mentors?
The
participating students will likely be taking the Arts 1317 Life drawing course
the same semester they are taking their first course in their intended area of
emphasis. Which means they should be alerted to the need to seek a faculty
mentor that very semester when they are taking the first Life drawing class. A
student shouldn’t assume they are being mentored simply because they are in the
first course of their area of emphasis. Contacting a faculty member in the area
of their BFA degree(see below) early in the semester
will allow a quality mentoring experience for both the students and the
faculty. This mentoring will include meeting with that faculty member and
selecting a time to look at the students art work.
Which in turn involves showing all the work from the previous coursework in the
Art Core (see below) and having input from the mentor on what work to include
and what work to improve.
The
BFA review is a critique-type event in which students show their portfolios
(the work coming from the art core courses and sketchbooks) to the members of
the Art faculty.
After
the completion of 6 art core courses (see previous page Art Core) and the first
course in the students chosen area of emphasis, the student signs up
participate.
All
students pursuing the BFA degrees offered in Art participate in the BFA review.

results
The
faculty look for creativity, concept and potential for
the student at the BFA level.
The
students return on Sunday and remove their work. The following week the results
of the review are made available to the students in the Art office, on or after
Wednesday of that week.
An
acceptance or positive vote allows the student to sign what is called the hard
declaration for the degree.
A
rejection or negative vote requires the student to decide if they wish to
continue pursuing the BFA degree and do the review again the following semester
or to change to a different major, possibly a BA in Art studio. If they decide
to again participate in the review, they must immediately seek a mentor from
the faculty teaching in the area of their intended degree. The mentoring
faculty will discuss the student’s portfolio and help them bring it up to the
standard needed to pass the review.
The
Art core to be completed before the student participates in the BFA review is
as follows:
WASH a
2D piece, a 3D piece and a piece showing color usage
Arts 1316 and Arts 1317 4
drawings from these 2 courses
The first course in the area of
emphasis 2
pieces showing the best work
Sketchbooks used outside of classroom,
done after high school All
– mostly assigned from classes
Do not
include any work which is a copy of a master artists
work (for example a drawing done of an artists drawing, or drawings from
photograph), that has a purpose but not to be shown in the review. Also, the
sketchbooks used in daily drawing courses aren’t included as sketchbooks.
