Probation and Suspension
What is it?
What do you do when you are in either situation?
Probationary status
When does it apply?
How does a student correct this?
When
a student’s grade point falls below the 2.0 requirement, they fall into the probationary
status. When this happens for the first time the student sees an advisor and
after typing advisement the block on their registration is lifted. If the
student doesn’t see an advisor they will have their schedule dropped prior to
the start of the coming semester. A student will be advised to reclaim
deficient grade points either in one of 2 ways or a combination of those 2
ways. First, a student can reclaim grade points by retaking a course (usually
an F or D grade), for each letter grade above the previous one earned, you multiply by the hours the course earns.
This gives a number of grade points which will be reclaimed. Second, a student
can take a new course and earn a B or A to add grade points. These are
calculated at the same value, each grade above C multiplied by the number of
hours generates a number of positive grade points.
When
a student doesn’t reclaim those necessary grade points for the 2nd
semester in a row, they are required to meet with the Dean/Dean’s representative.
A written plan is developed which the student will follow in order to remove
the probationary status. This Dean’s decision may include reinstatement, or a
period of suspension.
