Component courses (core courses)

What substitutes?

The transfer equivalency charts are found online, this reflects the articulation agreements with other colleges/universities. When a student takes a Math course somewhere else, the equivalent SHSU course is listed in the chart, for example. If we have no equivalent the chart indicates that. A transcript evaluator looks over a students transcript and notes which courses being transferred count for which SHSU courses. An advisor doesn’t reevaluate that and give credit, (a reevaluation of the transcript is possible through the admissions office, however.) The student always gets credit when the chart lists an SHSU course being equivalent to a transferred one.

SHSU respects other schools core requirements. When an AA degree is completed at a community college , the student transcript reflects that they are “core complete” or has earned an AA degree. (The electronic version of the transcript no longer automatically shows this and the student may have to request their transcript to be resent, by contacting the original school). That student has no core requirement to be fulfilled at SHSU. A transfer student may have completed a course at a community college which satisfies an area of the core curriculum, say Natural Science. Though that student doesn’t earn the AA degree and therefore is not “core complete” they would/could still be “component complete”, by satisfying the 8 hour Natural Science component.

When a student at SHSU returns to a community college, for example: in order to take a summer course; they are a transient student and they must take the course which is the exact equivalent to the SHSU core course. Look at this chart.

SHSU

Local community college (LCC)

Full time Spring 2010 student needs core course.

Summer – not attending.

Summer takes one core course. Chooses course A over course B, for some reason (time of day possible)

SHSU core course is equivalent to B. Course A has no equivalent at SHSU so isn’t in our core.

A and B each satisfy the component at this school.

Student completes course and sends transcript to SHSU.

SHSU rejects course A as satisfying the SHSU core.

Reason. Under these conditions, the student can’t take a course which isn’t a direct equivalent to our course. The “component complete” status won’t be invoked.
