Animation Course Descriptions

ART 231
Animation Concepts and Techniques
This course introduces the Principles and techniques of traditional animation, including the principles of motion, storyboarding, flipbooks, cell and pencil animation. This course also introduces students to the use of computers in animation. Prerequisite: ART 161, 163 (Basic Design 1 and Drawing 1)

ART 330
Motion Graphics
A study of the use of type in motion to create animated graphic designs, logos, and titles and animated concrete poetry. Prerequisite: ART 375, ART 234 (Graphic Design 2)

ART 331
2D Computer Animation
This course uses computer software to create 2D animations that incorporate traditional techniques and styles such as drawing and painting, cut paper, cell animation, and stop motion. Digital video editing techniques are practiced. Prerequisite: ART 201 ART 265 ART 234 (Basic Design 2, Graphics 1)

ART 375
Introduction to 3D Computer Animation
This course is an overview of 3D animation, the topics covered include 3D modeling techniques, key framing, graph editing, shading, lighting and rendering. Prerequisite: ART 231, ART 331, ART 234, ART 271 (Basic Design 2, 3D Design)

ART 376
Advanced 3D Computer Animation
This course delves further in the study of modeling techniques, shading, lighting and rendering. Advanced concepts are introduced including inverse kinematics, deformers, and dynamics. Course may be repeated. Prerequisite: ART 375

ART 430
3D Modeling for Computer Animation and Design
Techniques used in creating 3D models for computer animation are studied, including Polygonal modeling, Nurbs and Subdivision surfaces. Prerequisite: ART 376

Art 433
Character Animation
This course is a comprehensive study of both traditional and digital techniques used in character design, modeling and rigging using 3D software. Techniques for games and film are compared and action and motion sequences are created and studied. Prerequisite: ART 376, ART 269 (Life Drawing)

ART 460
Shading, Lighting and Rendering
An in depth study of surfaces and materials including texture and image mapping, lighting for compositing, cell shading, and rendering methods. Prerequisite: ART 376, ART 234, ART 265 (Graphics 1, Basic Design 2)

ART 464
Computer Animation for Interactive Games
Animation and modeling techniques as they apply to interactive video games are studied. Topics include polygonal modeling, character rigging, surface mapping, world building, sound effects and story development. Prerequisite: ART 401

ART 473
The History of Animation
This course is a survey of the History of Animation from early cartoons through contemporary special effects and 3D characters. The political, artistic and social uses of animation are examined. Prerequisite: ART 370

ART 490
Animation Portfolio
Students in this course will create a work in a specific area of expertise and author a demo reel using this work and refined work from previous courses. A print portfolio will be created and job searching skills such as presentation and resume building will be taught. Prerequisite: 12 hours of animation studio and approval of instructor.
