1998 Service Award Recipients

A.
Davis Ford
Austin Davis Ford graduated
from Sam Houston State Teachers
College in 1938. Mr. Ford was
a life-long educator with the
Conroe Independent School District.
A. Davis Ford Elementary School
was established in his honor
in 1978. He has been an avid
supporter of SHSU. Mr. Ford
was one of the founders of
the Alumni Association, and
even supported it with a personal
no-interest loan during a difficult
period. He and his wife Wauline,
Class of '39, have three children,
seven grandchildren and one
great granddaughter.

Toby
Gates
Toby Gates is General Agent
for the E. F. Hutton Life Insurance
Company in Huntsville. Mr.
Gates received his Bachelor
of Science degree from Sam
Houston State Teachers College
in 1941. Toby has been a life-long
member of the Alumni Association
and the Letterman's Association.
He has contributed to both
organizations by serving on
committees and as an officer.

William
P. Hall
William Paxton Hall is a partner
with Streit, Peterson, Hall & Keeney,
L.L.P. He received his Bachelor
of Science degree from Sam
Houston State University, May
1974. He went on to receive
his Doctor of Jurisprudence
from South Texas College of
Law. Bill served as president
of the Alumni Association for
two terms and drafted the current
By-laws. He also serves his
community through the Rotary
Club and the Boys & Girls
Clubs of Houston. Bill and
his wife, Laura, have two boys.

Janie
Spencer Joyce
Janie Spencer Joyce is currently
in the Department of Educational
Leadership and Counseling.
Janie served the Alumni Association
and the Office of Alumni Relations
as secretary for over 15 years.
She continues to be active
with alumni and the Office
of Alumni Relations. Mrs. Joyce
received the President's Employee
Scholarship in 1995 and was
nominated for the Staff Excellence
Award during the same year.
Janie and her husband, Gary,
reside in Huntsville.

Jane
Clements Monday
Jane Clements Monday received
her Bachelor of Science degree
from The University of Texas
at Austin, where the College
of Education recognized her
as an outstanding alumna. Mrs.
Monday is the former Huntsville
Mayor, member and co-chair
of The Texas State University
Board of Regents, and representative
to the Higher Education Coordinating
board. She currently is president
of the Huntsville Rotary Club
and an author. Jane has served
on numerous SHSU committees,
one being the General Sam Houston
Bicentennial Birthday Celebration.
Jane and her husband, Dr. Charles
Monday, have three children.

Guinn
Hugh Murray
"Hootie" Murray
is an Independent Oil & Gas
Landman. He graduated from
Sam Houston State College in
1962 with a Bachelor of Science
degree. Hootie is active in
the Alumni Association, Bearkat
club, and Lettermen's Association.
He continues to serve as the
chairman of the Lettermen's
Annual Golf Tournament, a tradition
he started in 1991. He is an
avid supporter of Bearkat and
Ladykat athletics. Bobby Williams,
Director of Athletics, says, "Hootie
is a well disciplined, active,
and positive ambassador for
the university community." Hootie
and his wife, Loretta, have
three children and three grandchildren.

Don Walker
Everitt Donald Walker, Jr.
is president and CEO of Alamo
Title Company. Mr. Walker received
his Bachelor of Arts degree
in 1969 from The University
of Texas at Austin. Don has
helped Sam Houston State University
in a variety of ways including
the building of the E. Don & Katy
Walker Education Center in
memory of his parents. His
civic involvement includes
the Boys & Girls Club of
San Antonio and The Arthritis
Foundation. He and his wife,
Denise, have two daughters.
