Dr. James F. Gaertner announces his retirement during Faculty and Staff picnic

SHSU president Jim Gaertner announced during the annual faculty and staff picnic on October 30th his intention to retire effective Aug. 31, 2010. "Nancy and I have enjoyed this time of our lives more than I can describe. It has been an incredible honor to serve with the entire university community as president of this grand old university," he said. "We have been able to renew old friendships, and make many new friends, while serving in a position that has brought us tremendous joy and fulfillment. Please accept my profound thanks and appreciation for your support and commitment to Sam Houston State during my tenure."

Annual Tree of Lights Ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, December 2nd

The annual Tree of Light ceremony has taken place for the past 88 years at SHSU and is Sam Houston’s oldest and most cherished tradition. Each year, students, faculty, staff and the surrounding community come together to celebrate a time of giving. The ceremony began as an annual Christmas Tree lighting and has evolved into a campus-wide celebration during the holiday season.

During the ceremony, several different University groups perform including the SHSU Choral and the Orange Pride Dance Team. Student organizations are also invited to decorate the tree with an ornament. Hot wassail and cookies are always served and a canned-food drive is organized to donate back to the community.
