Maniam Named 2012 Piper Professor

A Sam Houston State University finance professor who was honored with the university’s most prestigious teaching award four years ago has been recognized for excellence in teaching at the state level.

Balasundram Maniam has been named a recipient of the 2012 Minnie Stevens Piper Award, which awards 10 Texas professors annually in recognition of superior teaching at the college level. He will receive $5,000 and a commemorative pin from the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation. Details.

Graduate Students 'Horse' Around Overseas, Teach Europeans The Joy Of Riding

When Matt McMillan and his graduate students put on their cowboy hats and slip into their boots, don’t think for a second it’s just for show. Every speck of dirt on their Stetsons, mud on their heels and sweat on their brows is proudly earned; and their hard work is not going unnoticed.

For the second year, the American Quarter Horse Association has asked McMillan to put together a team of agricultural science graduate students to travel abroad this summer to conduct horsemanship clinics in Switzerland, Germany and Italy. Details.

Southland Baseball Title A Team Effort

When Sam Houston State clinched the 2012 Southland Conference baseball championship Sunday, May 13 with an 8-3 victory over Southeastern Louisiana, the title marked the first league regular season title for the program in 23 years.

With a new coach, only three returning starters and 16 newcomers on the 35-man roster, the Bearkats were predicted to be a middle-of-the-pack team in this year's Southland Conference race.  Details.

NCAA Berth The Prize At San Marcos

With the Southland Conference's automatic NCAA regional bid as the prize, the Sam Houston State baseball team heads to the league post-season tournament with their fate in their own hands.

Having played series against every team in the league, the Bearkats know that they can take care of business and not leave any doubt about maybe getting into the NCAA tournament. Instead, if the Kats can put together four strong days of baseball together later this week at Bobcat Baseball Ballpark in San Marcos, then they can earn the program its fourth NCAA regional appearance in the past six years. SHSU Football Team to be Honored at Touchdown Club of Houston

The Sam Houston State football team will be honored this year by the Touchdown Club of Houston before the annual slugfest with Stephen F. Austin State. Scheduled to speak are both coaches and both athletic directors. We think it will be a special luncheon, and we hope you will want to be a part of it. The hope is that this luncheon will continue each year and will promote the annual contest in Reliant Stadium between the two football teams. Details.
