Prof Works to Engage Local Youth in Reading Through Bookup Program

AS A PUBLISHED WRITER, Sam Houston State University English adjunct faculty member Amanda Nowlin-O’Banion understands the importance of storytelling in everyday life.

It is a lesson she teaches the future authors in her creative writing classes, as well as the students in her world literature course.

“Ancient literature in the oral tradition is all about story and how we connect as human beings through story; why story is crucial to the human experience,” she said.

Now, through a National Book Foundation program called BookUp she is conducting in Walker County, Nowlin-O’Banion is extending that lesson to local youth.  Details.

12thAnnual Bearkat Baseball Golf Scramble Fundraiser

We are excited to announce our 12th Annual Bearkat Golf Scramble to be played November 9th, 2012 at The Village Golf Club in Conroe, Tx. We look forward to seeing everybody again at this year’s event.

We have high expectations for our team both on and off the baseball field. Coming off arguably the best season since turning Division I, our goals for this program will be higher than ever before. We have the blueprint in place on how to achieve these goals, but without your generosity to our program we can not reach these expectations. All money raised will go directly toward our baseball program and more importantly our Student Athletes. Thank you in advance for your support, and we hope to see you on the golf course. Brochure.

Soccer Team Southland Conference Tournament Bound

As Sam Houston State prepares for its sixth appearance in the Southland Conference post-season women's soccer tournament in the 10-year history of the Bearkat program, SHSU head coach Tom Brown believes this trip to the event is special.

"We have seven seniors on this year's squad with six who are four-year letter winners," Brown said. "Those seniors have helped lead the team to Southland Conference tournament appearances each of their four seasons here. No other senior class in our program's history has equaled that accomplishment."  Details.
