Western Region Agricultural Education Research Conference

It sounds like a tough job, but somebody had to do it. Two faculty members from the SHSU Department of Agricultural Sciences traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii to present their research findings and ideas at the Western Region Agricultural Education Research Conference. Dwayne Pavelock and Doug Ullrich made the journey to present two posters related to agricultural education. Poster submissions were peer-reviewed and selected for presentation based on their quality and potential value to the fields of agriculture and agricultural education.

The first poster, in which Pavelock and Ullrich teamed with lead author Roger Hanagriff, was entitled, “A Proposed Model of Assessment: Texas Department of Agriculture Evaluation of Marketing Programs Applied to Secondary Agricultural Education Programs for Legislative and Accountability Reporting”. The authors proposed using TDA’s method of evaluating programs to determine the quality, value and impact of high school agriscience programs. The poster was awarded 3rd place.

A poster entitled, “The Economic Impact of the Texas FFA State Leadership Development Events”, was a collaborative effort of Ullrich, Pavelock and Carolyn Robinson. The findings of the study revealed that the State FFA LDEs, which have been hosted by SHSU for over 70 years, had a $41,000 economic impact on the city of Huntsville in December, 2003.
