Department to Host TEA Certification
Workshops
The summer months bring many opportunities for the state's
agricultural science teachers to participate in professional
development activities. Faculty in the Department of
Agricultural Sciences are heavily involved in conducting
such activities through the coordination and presentation
of workshops at several locations. Through $48,000 in
grants received from the Texas Education Agency, three
of these workshops will be held on the campus of Sam
Houston State University .
A $30,000 TEA grant funds the agricultural mechanics
certification workshop that will be held from June 7-25.
Drs. Billy Harrell and Joe Muller will coordinate and
provide instruction to current and prospective teachers,
and the class is also available for graduate credit.
Limited to 20 participants, the workshop has been hosted
by SHSU for 23 years.
The horticulture certification workshop is made possible
by a $15,000 TEA grant. Like its counterpart in agricultural
mechanics, the workshop will be held from June 7-25 and
will include intense instruction in all areas of horticultural
arts and sciences. Drs. Doug Ullrich and Dwayne Pavelock
will coordinate activities and Tim Pannkuk will lead
the instructional aspects. The workshop is in its fifth
year at SHSU and is available for graduate credit or
certification purposes.
The third workshop allows teachers to earn the necessary
certification to teach work-based learning at the high
school level. Funded by TEA's $3,000 grant, the department
collaborates with the Region VI Education Service Center
on the project. Ullrich and Pavelock serve as the workshop's
coordinators, which will be hosted by SHSU for the third
year.
