SHSU Hosts 2003 State FFA Leadership
Development Events
It began in 1931 as an idea to do "something that would
contribute to the training of high school vocational
agriculture students and also bring recognition" to the
Vocational Agriculture Club and Sam Houston State Teachers
College . Letters were sent out to FFA chapters in this
area of the state explaining two contests and inviting
them to participate. The two contests, public speaking
and debate, have evolved into 12 events that are now
part of the State FFA Leadership Development Events (LDEs).
Eighty-five chapters and over 800 FFA members, advisors,
parents, judges and industry representatives from across
Texas gathered on December 6, 2003 to compete in the
73 rd edition of the Texas FFA State LDEs on the campus
of Sam Houston State University . The events continue
to be hosted by the SHSU Department of Agricultural Sciences
and the Collegiate FFA. Instrumental in conducting the
events were some 50 SHSU students and approximately 25
collegiate FFA members from other universities.
A state champion was crowned in each of the 12 events
