Agricultural Students
Elected to Leadership Positions
SHSU students Brian VanDelist and Jayson Hill were recently
elected national president and southern region vice president,
respectively, of Delta Tau Alpha, a national agricultural honor
society.
VanDelist, a junior animal science major from San Antonio,
and Hill, a junior general agriculture major from Cleveland,
were elected by delegates attending the 44th national DTA convention
at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. Both are members
of the university's chapter in the Department of Agricultural
Sciences.
Delta Tau Alpha is a national organization whose primary
purposes include the promotion and recognition of high standards
of scholarship, leadership, and character among agricultural
students. Membership in the organization is by invitation
only to agriculture majors who rank in the top 30 percent
of their university class. Currently, there are over thirty
chapters throughout the United States.
Serving as a national officer will involve much more than
simply holding a figurehead title, according to Dwayne Pavelock,
SHSU chapter adviser for DTA.
"
Brian and Jayson will work on securing new chapters and improving
the national organization," said Pavelock. "Members
currently receive several benefits by joining the honor society,
but the national officers know that so much more is possible.
Serving as a national officer is also a great way for these
young men to hone their leadership and communication skills. "
In addition to the officer elections, SHSU chapter members
also participated in other convention activities, including
discussion and voting on major revisions to the honor society's
constitution and bylaws, the Agricultural Knowledge Bowl,
and the Ag Olympics. Other members from Sam Houston in attendance
were Jessica Redden, Adam Jenke, Ashley Ray, and J.R. Metcalfe.
