Annual Banquet Recognizes
Outstanding Students and Scholarship Recipients
At the Annual Agriculture Awards Banquet on April 22, 2003,
the outstanding student from each major within the agricultural
sciences department was recognized. In addition to the awards
presented here, the scholarship recipients for the department
were recognized at the College of Education and Applied Science
Awards Ceremony.
The Department’s Outstanding Students are those who
have been active in the departmental organizations and activities
in addition to an excellent academic record. The Outstanding
Agriculture Student was Meredith Cook. The rccipients of the
outstanding student awards were: Michella Moseley, Agriculture
Education; Scott Weaver, Agriculture Mechanization; Mark Campise,
Animal Science; Amber Hemmenway, Horticulture and Crop Science;
Heather Haude, Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences; and Pam
Waltmon, Agriculture Business. These students are recognized
as the finest our department has to offer; they exhibit excellent
qualities and possess great professional potential. The future
of agriculture looks bright with individuals such as these
leading the way.
The W.E. “Brick” Lowry Scholarship was established
in 1976 in honor of Dean W.E. “Brick” Lowry and
Mrs. W.E. Lowry. This scholarship is awarded to students majoring
in Agriculture and who are active in the Collegiate FFA Organization.
The recipients for the W.E. “Brick” Lowry Leadership
Awards for 2003 are Meredith Cook, Michelle Miller, Danell
Woolery, and Brian VanDelist.
The Wilson-Warner Scholarship was established in 1994 as
a memorial to S. Calhoun Wilson, Sr., Logan Wilson, and S.
R. Warner. S. C. Wilson, Sr. was the first chair of the Agriculture
Department at SHSU. Logan Wilson, the son of S. C. Wilson,
Sr. served with distinction as President of the University
of Texas. S. R. Warner was a long-time chair of the Biology
Department. Awards from this endowment are given to students
seeking bachelors or higher degrees in agricultural and biological
sciences. Ashley Brasher, Rebecca Ross, Mandy Klein, Aaron
Wilson are all recipients of the 2003 Wilson-Warner Scholarship.
The G. H. Morrison Scholarship was established in 1974 in
memory of Gerald H. Morrison. Mr. Morrison served on the
faculty in the Department of Agricultural Sciences for many
years. The scholarships are awarded to young men or women
of good character majoring in Agriculture at Sam Houston
State University. This year’s recipient is Eric Hundl.
The Letts/Hopper Scholarship was established in 1993 in memory
of T.C. Letts, father of Margaret Sue Letts Hopper and long
time faculty member in Agricultural Sciences at Sam Houston
State University. The scholarships are awarded to junior
or senior students majoring in Agriculture at Sam Houston
State University. Meagan Kirgan received this award.
The Willie Frank and Virginia Hall Trust Scholarship was
established in 1988 in order to benefit students majoring
in Agricultural Education. Vanessa Brossman and Michele Igo
were recipients of this scholarship.
San Antonio Livestock Exposition Scholarships are awarded
to students that were active participants in FFA and 4-H programs
while in secondary schools, achieving standards of excellence
established by their respective programs. San Antonio Livestock
Exposition Scholarship recipients include Jennifer Broom, Brian
Pape, and Leslie Cronin.
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Endowed Scholarship was
established at Sam Houston State University in 1978. The Houston
Livestock Show and Rodeo is a long-time supporter of youth
development activities. These scholarships are awarded to outstanding
students majoring in Agricultural Sciences. The following individuals
received a Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship: Amber
Bowser, Joshua Muller, Amber Campise, Annette Schmidt, Yvan
Jayne, and Maureen O’Neil.
Each of the outstanding students and the scholarship recipients
was selected due to their dedication to the profession of agriculture
and their excellent performance inside and outside the classroom.
These individuals have surpassed the expectations placed on
students and deserve congratulations for their accomplishments!
