Department Hosts Workshops
for Teachers
The Department of Agricultural Sciences hosted 29 agricultural
science teachers on June 24 & 25 in a workshop that provides
them certification to teach Work-Based Learning (WBL) in Agriculture
at the secondary level. Teachers from Plainview, Texarkana,
Pleasanton, Nacogdoches and numerous points in between gathered
for the 2-day event that centered on the guidelines and requirements
of a WBL program, which consists of students being employed
during part of the school day at an agricultural-based company.
Funded in part by a Texas Education Agency grant and conducted
as a collaborative effort with the Region VI Education Service
Center, the workshop included a number a presenters who spoke
on such topics as curriculum materials, record keeping practices,
child labor laws, special needs students, agricultural safety
and program requirements. By completing the course, teachers
also became certified to teach Diversified Career Preparation,
a similar work-based program that does not require jobs to
be related to the agricultural industry.
Dr. Dwayne Pavelock and Dr. Doug Ullrich coordinated the workshop,
which was hosted by SHSU for the second year.
Three-week workshops ending in June in Horticulture and Agricultural
Mechanics allowed approximately 40 teachers to be certified
to teach in those specialties at the high school level. The
Ag Mechanics workshop was taught by Dr. Billy Harrell and Dr.
Joe Muller, while Mr. Tim Pannkuk served as primary instructor
for the Horticulture Workshop. Other specialists were called
upon to provide instruction on various topics. Both of these
workshops were supported by grants from the Texas Education
Agency as well.
