Bearkats Attend the Texas FFA Convention

SHSU student Amber Key (right) shares information with prospective students at the State FFA Convention. Amber transferred to Sam Houston State from Kilgore College and is majoring in Agricultural Education.
Amidst the sea of blue and gold at the 75th Texas FFA Convention, spots of Bearkat Orange could be found. The annual convention, held this year in Houston, July 8-11, represents the largest gathering of agriculturally inclined young adults in the state, and it offers SHSU an excellent opportunity to promote its academic programs to the future leaders.

Through a promotional booth and interaction with SHSU Student Ambassadors, FFA members can get a glimpse of what SHSU has to offer them. The state convention serves as one of the department’s largest recruiting venues with a pool of over 6,000 prospective students.

In addition to promotional activities, many behind-the-scenes tasks at the convention are carried out through Bearkat assistance. Organizational tasks for the convention and assistance with state-level leadership development events represent just a few of the responsibilities Sam Houston students perform. Dr. Doug Ullrich and Dr. Dwayne Pavelock, SHSU Ag Ed professors, led the contingent of SHSU 53 students who attended and assisted with the convention.

In addition to contributing to the success of the convention and recruitment for SHSU, students gained valuable experience related to their chosen profession. Countless networking opportunities are an additional perk to those in attendance.

The Texas FFA and SHSU have a historical relationship. Sam Houston State University was one of the first colleges to offer career and leadership development events for FFA members throughout the region and state. The Department and Collegiate FFA Chapter will host the State FFA Leadership Development Events in December, an activity we have undertaken since its inception in 1939. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo provides financial support for that event.
