The SHSU Livestock Judging and Beef Cattle Show
Teams hosted the annual Heat Wave Prospect Show
on the weekend of May 30th and June 1st at the
Walker County Fair Grounds. The youth sanctioned
cattle show serves as a fundraiser for the teams,
raising over $4,500 this year for the teams to
apply toward travel expenses and entry fees throughout
the year. Additional financial assistance is
provided to the teams though the Office of Student
Life.

Houston Livestock
Show and Rodeo Supports Graduate Program
The Department of Agricultural Sciences recently
received word from officials at the Houston Livestock
Show and Rodeo would again support graduate assistantships
in the Department to the tune of $37,800. This
level of funding provides a monthly stipend for
three graduate assistants during the long semesters
and one during the summer months.

Bearkats Attend
the Texas FFA Convention
Amidst
the sea of blue and gold at the 75th Texas FFA
Convention, spots of Bearkat Orange could be
found. The annual convention, held this year
in Houston, July 8-11, represents the largest
gathering of agriculturally inclined young adults
in the state, and it offers SHSU an excellent
opportunity to promote its academic programs
to the future leaders.

Sam Houston Shines
at NACTA Conference
Dr.
William Harrell, Professor of Agricultural Mechanization,
received the NACTA Teacher Fellow Award at the
annual conference of the North American Colleges
and Teachers of Agriculture on June 20. The award
comes in recognition of Harrell’s outstanding
dedication to his profession and superior traits
as a teacher and scholar in agriculture.

Department Hosts
Workshops for Teachers
The Department of Agricultural Sciences hosted
29 agricultural science teachers on June 24 & 25
in a workshop that provides them certification
to teach Work-Based Learning (WBL) in Agriculture
at the secondary level. Teachers from Plainview,
Texarkana, Pleasanton, Nacogdoches and numerous
points in between gathered for the 2-day event
that centered on the guidelines and requirements
of a WBL program, which consists of students
being employed during part of the school day
at an agricultural-based company.

University Hosts Meat Goat Event
The Agriculture Complex at Sam Houston State
University in Huntsville was the site of the
12th Annual American Meat Goat Association Membership
Meeting June 20-21. "The meat goat industry
in the United States has expanded tremendously
in the past 10 to 12 years," said Bobby
Lane, chair of the SHSU Department of Agricultural
Sciences.
