Horticulture Club Members Teach The Children

Horticulture Club members participated in Children's Barnyard activities last semester, providing each child with a potted chrysanthemum to take back to their school or home. The annual Poinsettia Sale held each December provides funds for field trips and other club activities. With the coming of spring, members have been busy preparing for a spring plant sale as well.

Club members take much time, effort, planning and enjoyment in sharing their knowledge with over 500 kindergartners from the Huntsville ISD through Green Thumb Day, held each spring at the Horticulture Center. This is an exceptionally rewarding activity for club members as they enjoy the excitement of glowing faces of the young children. Members provide the kindergartners with educational tours through the greenhouses, play various games with the youngsters using fruits and vegetables as game pieces, and help them pot their own plants to enjoy at home. Snacks and drinks are provided before the youngsters climb aboard their buses and vans to head back to school.

Members are busy moving new plant materials into the recently completed greenhouse and are planning field trips to Moody Gardens and Color Spot nursery in the spring. Club officers are Walter Hambrick, President; Mark Kaizer, Vice-President; Helen Steil, Secretary; Will Hustead, Treasurer; and Bill Goldberg, Ag Council Representative. The club's advisor is Dr. Sudeep Vyapari.
