Rodeo Program Comes Out Bucking

A new era has begun in the heritage-rich SHSU Rodeo Program. Sonny Sikes, coach of numerous national champion competitors, has retired after 40 years at the helm of the rodeo program. Although he has officially stepped down, Sikes will continue to offer his able assistance in the growth of the nationally ranked program.

Roger Walters and Roger Hanagriff, both SHSU rodeo alumni, have enthusiastically assumed the reins of the program, with Walters serving as primary coach of the team. Walters and Hanagriff agree, "we have an outstanding group of youngsters this year that are sure to provide some exciting times in the sport of college rodeo." The team has approximately 55 members that will cover all the National Intercollegiate Rodeo events. Walters and Hanagriff were successful in recruiting a number of junior college transfer students that participated in the 1999 NIRA Finals as well as former Texas high school rodeo champions. The practice sessions involve a Monday through Thursday schedule where the students practice roping calves, dogging steers, and team roping.

The practice sessions involve technique as well as matches to improve the students' skills while under pressure. With the prevailing attitude, talent and a bit of luck, we are hopeful Bearkats will be on their way to yet another National Finals Rodeo this spring.
