Student Livestock Judges Criscross U.S.

The Livestock Judging Team is an organized group of students who share a common interest in the evaluation and selection of market and breeding animals. This team requires hard work and dedication by every member and instills constant self-discipline and learning new aspects about the industry. Team members travel across the country competing in intercollegiate contests that involve judging of animals and providing oral reasons to defend their decisions on the respective livestock classes. The 1998-99 SHSU judging team consisted of six members coached by Dr. Stanley Kelley. Dr. Kelley was assisted by graduate students Christi Johnson and Doug Smith. Senior members were Christy Banks (Katy), Brian Brightwell (Dayton), Chris Finke (White Hall), Brandon Gregson (Conroe), Daryl Marek (LaGrange), Elizabeth Stewart (Richmond), and Scott Talley (Houston).

This past year the team represented SHSU in competitive judging events in Arizona, Colorado, Mississippi, Kansas, Missouri, California and Kentucky, as well as Fort Worth and Houston. The current judging team members will end their collegiate judging careers at the national contest in Louisville, Kentucky in November. Team members stress how much they have enjoyed representing the university and all the valuable experiences they have had this year.
