Dr.
Murray A. Brown retired this past summer as Secretary-Treasurer
of National Association of College Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA),
a post he has held since 1973. He first served NACTA as President
in 1969-70. Brown participated in all but one Annual NACTA Conference
since 1966. He was also named a Teacher Fellow in 1972 and received
the Distinguished Educator Award in 1978. As a token of their appreciation
for Brown's many years of outstanding service, he was presented
with the Distinguished Service Award at the Annual Conference last
June.
Brown
was born in Rochester, New York. He earned a B.S. in Agriculture
Education from Michigan State University in 1950, after serving
previously in the U.S. Navy. Brown moved to Texas to pursue an M.S.
in Dairy Science and a Ph.D. in Animal Reproduction from Texas A&M
University. He began teaching Dairy Science as a graduate assistant
in 1953. Brown was promoted to Associate Professor at TAMU in 1962
and served as Professor and Chairman of the Agriculture Department
at SHSU from 1965 to 1969. Dr. Brown continued to teach dairy and
animal science courses at SHSU until his retirement in 1995. During
his career, Brown supervised over 70 masters theses and more than
15 Ph.D. dissertations.
Dr.
Brown authored or co-authored over 85 research papers and one book.
His many professional accomplishments include serving as dairy consultant
to Milk, Inc., agricultural consultant to Tenneco Oil in Ethiopia,
and U.S. AID and U.S. Peace Corps in Togo, Gabon, and Central African
Republic. Brown is married to Katherine and together they have a
son and two daughters. They also have four grandsons and one great-grandson.
