BHSam Houston State University’s Staff Council’s December Spotlight on Staff winner is, Brad Herget, assistant director of Event Services & Technology.

Herget graduated from Frostburg State University in western Maryland with a bachelor of science degree in Earth Science. There, he developed his skills as a lead sound engineer on Frostburg’s technical services crew.

He joined the Sam Houston State University staff in 2016 and has worked for the Lohman Student Center as the assistant director of Event Services & Technology throughout his entire tenure.

“I am fortunate to have had great mentors when I was learning about event technology and have a solid background in audio and lighting design. I also use my creative background to find unique, if not unconventional, ways to solve audio-visual problems whenever they arise,” Herget said. “I bring a creative vision to our department. Whenever I’m listening to music or preparing for an event, I am always making a light show in my head, which I then communicate to the tech crew for them to improve on and implement during an event.”

To better serve the SHSU community, Herget has increased the size of the tech crew from eight students to over 20 and increased their technology offerings by adding advanced theatrical lighting and sound systems to events in the LSC ballroom, mall area and events throughout the building.

“I think that the university community will be truly impressed with our upcoming expansion and the new technology offerings that we will be rolling out when our new space opens in just over a year,” Herget said.

Herget serves as a member of the University Special Events Committee and is heavily involved with the LSC expansion project where he offers his expertise on lighting, sound and A/V systems.

“At the LSC I am constantly looking for ways to improve our reservations and event support processes. I am also working to expand our tech crew’s impact across campus by providing event services and advanced A/V technology in other spaces,” Herget said. “I am constantly researching new lighting and sound equipment to provide a seamless and reliable process for not only our internal tech crew, but also on the end-user side for our guests.”

When he is not working, Herget is an avid percussionist and appreciates vintage synthesizers. He motivates himself and others through humor and enjoys the simple things in life.
