A week of recess from classes March 12-16 for Spring Break provides relief from academic demands and allows time for students to travel.

Sam Houston State University’s Student Legal & Mediation Services will host a “Spring Break Kick-Off” in order to educate Spring-Breakers on potential risks. The event will take place in the Kat Klub on Wednesday, March 7 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

“Many students travel for Spring Break, and we want students to be aware of some of the common issues that might happen to them,” Gene Roberts, director of the Office of Student Legal and Mediation Services said. “We’re creating a fun atmosphere for students where they can learn.”

Their presentation will inform students of their rights and responsibilities on issues they may encounter while on Spring Break: identity theft, dealing with law enforcement, traffic stops and alcohol-related issues.

“Knowing your rights and responsibly exercising them is crucial. That knowledge needs to be provided before students leave for Spring Break,” Roberts said. “Some people want to take advantage of college students, for example, stealing identities. We want students to know what to do so that if they find themselves in one of the situations we will present, they are already prepared.”

SLSM will provide free games in the Kat Klub, “mocktails,” snacks and one student will win a cooler of Spring Break essentials.

Students will also have the opportunity to earn extra tickets for the cooler giveaway by bringing food items and canned goods for the SHSU food pantry.
